"We had done something pretty amazing. We were what the whole craft brewing industry is today: a combination of modern food science technology and traditional brewing. It was a unique combination."

Fritz Maytag talks with the San Francisco Chronicle about his early days at Anchor.
Fritz Maytag on taking over Anchor Brewing 50 years ago On Aug. 2, 1965, a young Stanford grad named Fritz Maytag purchased a controlling interest in Anchor Brewing, a nearly defunct San Francisco brewery that had been founded in 1896. Anchor produced steam beer — a style created during the Gold Rush using a lager yeast that ferments at higher temperatures. Marvin Garden, San Mateo, Ca. 1975. Foosball, horseshoes, pinball, dice and a mean hamburger. Heck yeah, little did I know about that wonderful Steam except I really x 10 liked it.  Still do. You're the first and the best. Long live Anchor Steam!

The craft beer community lost a legendary voice on Monday with the passing of longtime beer writer, Fred Eckhardt. Last summer, Tom Acitelli wrote about Fred's first beer column back in 1984, which, according to Tom, also was be the beginning of the first regular American newspaper coverage of what came to be called “craft beer,” and happens to include a mention of Anchor Steam Beer.

Cheers, Fred, and thank you for your support and contributions to #craftbeer. You will certainly be missed.
Fred Eckhardt began writing a beer column for the Portland Oregonian on April 25, 1984.

Brewed with two-row barley malt and six varieties of fresh whole-cone hops, #AnchorIPA's distinctively complex aroma, spiky bitterness, malty depth, and clean finish unite to create a uniquely flavorful, memorable, and timeless craft IPA. #craftbeer

Mark Carpenter joined Anchor Brewing in 1971 and went on to be a part of many "firsts" in American craft brewing. Mark recently talked with First We Feast about 10 beers that have helped shape his brewing career. #craftbeer #brewing
We look back at how the brewmaster's role in developing West Coast IPAs and seasonals shaped the future of craft beer.
