Identify a problem today, design and manufacture a robot to help tomorrow

An ambitious new project led by Professor Daniela Rus, of MIT’s CSAIL, aims to democratize access to robots (http://goo.gl/k17kr). It currently takes years to build an operational robot— Rus and team are developing technology to reinvent the way they’re designed and produced, and put a customizable manufacturing process into the hands of everyday people. Their research is focused on automating production and reducing development time, which could open doors to a diverse set of potential applications. The below video shows the first devices to be prototyped: a robotic gripper to assist people with limited mobility and a robotic insect to explore contaminated spaces.

We are the UK partner for Rethink Robotics and the greatly anticipated Baxter Research Robot is now available in the UK. It’s revolutionising how labs of all sizes are able to leverage cutting edge technology to develop their own applications and innovations. Baxter leverages impressive safety features, ease of use and affordability as well as many more characteristics that make it an ideal fit for labs. Baxter allows research teams to focus on specific application such as human robot interactions, collaborative robotics, planning, manipulation, control and perception. Baxter has a built in standard ROS framework, utilises an open source Software Development Kit and leverages collaboration tools. Baxter has 7 degrees-of-freedom, 360 degree sonar and front camera, torque sensing & fully integrated cameras. 

We also have a partnership with Aldebaran Robotics who design & manufacture NAO, a state-of-the-art humanoid robot. NAO stands at 58cm and weighs 5kg and is the most widely used humanoid robot for academic purposes worldwide. Aldebaran’s vision is to enhance everyday lives. NAO has many key benefits including: fully and easily programmable, compatible, autonomous, interactive, robust, and multi-disciplinary. NAO can move using 25 degrees of freedom and its coreless motors. It can interact with its two speakers, LED’s, tactile sensors, prehensile hands, infrared sensors and WIFI. It can sense using its HD cameras, microphones and 8 force sensing resistors. NAO can think using its software suite and large memory.
