We've been talking to parents at our services across the UK to find out what they want from a parenting class:
There is no shortage of books about parenting full of tips, tricks, dos and don’ts. But what do parenting classes offer?

Kitty’s son, Joshua, has severe autism and is non-verbal. She was so impressed with The Pines short breaks service, where Joshua attended, that she now works there herself.

"The staff know him for being very kind – a lot of the other children have physical disabilities and some can’t speak and Robert helps them too. That improves his confidence and the whole experience is good for him. He’s learning some independence from me. The breaks really are invaluable."

12-year-old Robert has autism and haemophilia. Read his story: http://buff.ly/1q1WlmW #WAAW

"When Jay started school part-time, an incident took place where he hit a camera on a child’s head and pulled the teachers hair - I didn’t know what was going on. It was after that we decided to take Jay to the health visitor and have him checked. It was the health visitor who referred us to Action for Children to help with Jay’s issues. Janet, our worker there, did three sessions with Jay to observe his behaviour at the Centre and then we met Dr Brown, who diagnosed my son with autism. "

We supported Monisha and Sukhdev when their son, Jay, was diagnosed as autistic - http://buff.ly/1Tiw7rD #WAAW

Steven, 16 and his sister, Sarah, 14 were removed from their birth parents due to neglect. They weren’t given proper food, regular meals, sleep routines or mental stimulation which led to emotional ill-health and behavioural issues.

The siblings spent two years in foster care before finally being adopted by Sue and Jim when Steven was 5 and Sarah was 3. His mum, Sue, spoke to us - http://buff.ly/1PFzemK #WAAW

Joe was diagnosed with a genetic condition when he was 6 months old meaning he is autistic and has epilepsy.

"Speaking is actually quite difficult for him - he only speaks when he wants or doesn’t want. The other difficulty is his challenging behaviour, stubbornness and violence. Life was hellish before we got in touch with Action for Children – we didn’t have any real support, apart from Joe being statemented and having his transport to and from his school funded by the local authority."

Action for Children
Introduction
Action for Children is a national charity that supports and speaks out on behalf of the most vulnerable and neglected children and young people in the heart of communities throughout the UK.

We work directly with more than 300,000 children, young people, parents and carers through 650 services. We help transform the lives of thousands of children and young people each year and we’ve been doing so for over 145 years.
