What stops a girl in Africa from going to school? Is it a lack of books and uniforms? Or the lack of a safe path to school? It could be any of these things. But there is another, rarely talked about, problem that can bring girls’ education to a screeching halt: the simple lack of a sanitary towel when she has her period.
At ActionAid we recognise that sanitary towels are not trivial, nice-to-have items – they are essential tools in the fight against poverty and injustice. To mark World Menstrual Hygiene Day this Friday, find out more about what we're doing to support girls and why #menstruationmatters.

In climate crises, women and girls are forced to travel longer distances to collect water. On these journeys, they are often exposed to the threat of violence. Women and girls in Somaliland told us of their fears now that drought has gripped their country.
Every day, climate change is threatening the lives of women and girls around the world. Erratic rainfall, rising sea levels and devastating droughts are destroying crops and livelihoods, and leaving women and girls vulnerable.

Mustafa Ahmed Mohammed is part of ActionAid Somaliland's team who are delivering emergency food to families on the brink of survival. He blogs about the communities he works with, who are enduring a terrible drought because of the devastating effects of El Niño.
In my native Somaliland a disaster is unfolding in slow motion. A relentless drought is tightening its stranglehold on communities, slowly but surely.

It’s that time of the month again - well, actually it’s that time of the year. On Saturday 28th May it’s Menstrual Hygiene Day, and to mark it we've reimagined five 'period' posters to highlight period myths and taboos that women and girls still face today.

Find out about some of creative solutions that ActionAid, in collaboration with the communities that we work with, has been developing to tackle the impacts of climate change.
What do tarpaulins, fighting cockerels, and raised villages have in common? Not much, on the surface. But together they're some of the creative solutions that ActionAid, in collaboration with the communities that we work with, has been developing to tackle the impacts of climate change.

“I lost them. I lost my sons. We were all together. But I lost them because the traffickers put my brother and my boys on a different boat. We didn’t want to be separated but they forced us. Where are my children?”

Refugee families are enduring winter temperatures in temporary shelters on Lesvos. Pregnant women and tiny babies are amongst the most vulnerable. They have survived long and dangerous journeys, but they are still struggling to keep warm this winter.
At night, the temperature on Lesvos falls into single digits. Refugees are huddling in temporary shelters while they wait to register.

Malawi is the poorest country in the world. An unfair tax agreement, signed with the UK over half a century ago, makes it possible for British companies working there to get away with paying hardly any tax in the country.
When big companies don’t pay their fair share, essential public services like healthcare and education are starved of funding – and women and girls pay the price.
Malawi is the poorest country in the world. And thanks to an outdated, unfair tax agreement, UK companies who work there are able to pay hardly any tax in the country, starving Malawi's schools and hospitals of critical funds. It’s time for that to change.
