Google hosted a Machine Learning (ML) event with over 120 attendees at the Sunnyvale office last night to share how Google engineers are applying ML to some of the most popular Google products.

We kicked off the event with some fun, interactive demos that demonstrate how anyone can contribute to ML datasets and incorporate AI to build products. Below you'll see folks contributing to Crowdsource (you can too → goo.gl/Zm4og9) and creating ASCII selfie art that leverages Google's speech to text functionality to create custom quotes on ASCII selfie stickers.

For International Women’s Day (IWD) 2018, Women Techmakers (goo.gl/f62jaX) hosted 16 summits around the world to inspire, educate, and provide networking opportunities to women technologists. Google's Product Inclusion team delivered an engaging and informative experience for IWD attendees through the ASCII Selfie Demo, that uses just a Raspberry Pi unit, Dymo printer, and Android phone.

Attendees take a selfie using a Pixel phone or can print out a pre-loaded image of Katherine Johnson or Ada Lovelace. They then have the option to provide a quote using the speech to text functionality, and get a custom sticker printed with their image converted to ASCII art and their quote. Check out some of their creations below!

For the Meet a Googler feature this week, we caught up with Brandon Nixon who's currently working in the London office.

Meet Brandon Nixon, People Operations Rotation Associate

How long have you been at Google?

1 year, 4 months (not including my internships)

How did you begin working at Google?

I have a great mentor who encouraged me years ago to apply to Google’s BOLD Immersion Program. This evolved into two consecutive internships and a full-time offer, opportunities that I just couldn’t pass on.

So what’s your role at Google?

Currently, as a part of the Human Resources Associate (HRA) Program, I work in London as an International Benefits Analyst responsible for assisting Benefits Specialists with special projects during my rotation.

Why Google?

I am able to do so many things outside of my core role here. I can volunteer with the Black Googlers Network (BGN), work on a 20% creative project with the Business Inclusion team, or go work out during lunch as long as I get my job done. Google understands that diverse people have diverse interests and passions, so there is always opportunity to do something out of the norm.

Where inspires you about your work?

I connect with people across the world every single day. Not many can say that.

What energizes you?

Good people, good (vegan) food, and good energy

PC: Jimmy Phan (Jimmy Jets)
