New uses of an old drug - Aspirin
#ScienceSunday curated by +Allison Sekuler +Robby Bowles
Salicylate, found in willow bark, has been a key ingredient in medicine cabinets for thousands of years – ancient Egyptian manuscripts describe it as a treatment for inflammation. In a modified form – aspirin – it remains a successful anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Recently, though, research has revealed a puzzling side-effect of taking aspirin: the drug seems to lower a person's chances of developing some forms of cancer.

Yeah, that chemical is so "panaceous" that it makes one wonder how could ever natural selection come to select a single molecule for multiple curative virtues like it maybe has in the case of salicylate, in the opposite direction, that is, to what natural selection does with venoms tending to multiply active molecules.

Woman in Saudi Arabia sentenced to 50 lashes for texting swear words.

Two (presumably former) friends in Saudi Arabia got into an argument via text message. One of them cussed. The other took her phone to court and showed a judge, who found the potty-mouthed texter guilty and sentenced her to be whipped with 50 lashes.

But she got off easy. A Sri Lankan woman is facing a possible execution in Saudi Arabia for -- wait for it! -- witchcraft, after she was accused of casting a magic spell on some girl.

Technology to revolutionize travel in next decade

High-speed magnetic levitation vacuum tube allows riders to travel from New York to Los Angeles in 45 minutes, New York to Beijing in 2 hours, and around the world in only 6 hours.

Despite the high velocity, passengers will not experience discomfort because the tube apparently only produce 1G of force at top speed, comparable to riding in a normal car on a highway. ~Natt Garun

In French I ended up once with as attempt to a catchy slogan for the flyer to a public party simultaneous to antinuclear militants and antimilitarists, at a place called "The Palladium" :

Uranium ? Plutonium ?? Palladium !!

This plays to the French ear first by the homophony of -um and "homme", man.
