General Discussion  -

Film Shooters:

I've been a part of this group for quite some time now, and although I don't share my work much (the work I do doesn't really fit the sharing mentality, as it is mostly project oriented work and not standalone images) I do chime in on discussions and questions when I feel it is useful.

My situation is interesting because I left the states about 3 years ago to teach ESL in South Korea, and left the states without any knowledge or much interest in photography, but found and fell deeply in love with it since moving to Seoul. My first two years was mostly dedicated to digital photography, but I'm happy to say that last year digital was enthusiastically substituted for film and I spent the whole year as a film shooter.

The reason for this post is that I left the states without knowing anyone that was into photography, let alone interested in film. Well, I'm making a rare visit back to the states this coming week and would love to meet up with a few photographers, film or digital, who are from my part of the world.

I live in the Dallas, TX area and although I'll be busy most of the week, I will be free this coming Monday and possibly for a bit towards the end of the week or next weekend. Even if it's just coffee or lunch or something, I'd just love to connect with some people who share this passionate art and make some physical connections with them beyond their profile pictures. I'd even be willing to travel a bit to meet up if I can manage it. It's weird not knowing many photographers back in the states, considering they are the bulk of my friendships in my life now.

If anyone is interested, please PM me or let me know in the comments.

Have shot my last few portrait shoots with hp5, and although I think I will continue shooting with Tri-X mainly, I was happy with a few of the frames that I was able to come away with.

Also, have been strictly shooting my m6 with a 50mm lens for the last five months. It's been both quite nice not allowing myself to worry about other lens options or anything else besides the camera and lens in my hand. Highly recommend doing such sometime, even if only for a few months.

Insightful advice for all the unique, wonderful people of our world. This is water...

"Boredom, routine, and petty frustration.. crap like this is exactly where the work of choosing is going to come in...

Natural default setting is a certainty that situations like this are really ALL ABOUT ME, about MY hungriness, MY fatigue, and MY desire to just get home...

But if you really learn how to pay attention, then you will know there are other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down...

The capital-T Truth is about the real value of a real education, which has almost nothing to do with knowledge, and everything to do with simple awareness; awareness of what is so real and essential, so hidden in plain sight all around us, all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves over and over: this is water."

'This is Water' a video created for David Foster Wallace's commencement address to the 2005 graduation class of Kenyon College.

The world has been forever altered by the creation of the photograph.

And we can never let one of the most important genres of this art, documentary photography, disappear. It plays such an essential role in informing the public on issues that deserve to have their stories told.

Organizations like the Magnum Foundation are doing their best to support documentary photography, and are well worth donating to.

So decide to skip out on one of your more unnecessary purchases tomorrow, and give it towards a worthy cause.

This Pakon scanner is dangerous. My M6 is in for some serious usage in 2014.

Perhaps the most meaningful set of words I have had the pleasure of reading this year. What an amazing father. The world would certainly be a better place if we all strove for the understanding this man has acquired.

Great photo, I love the shapes and shadows in the background, Marie is able to be the focus without drawing all of the attention. Very well done.

Introduction

I struggle most attempting to narrow my interests. I've delved myself into the creative arts through the fields of photography and writing. I get lost digging deep into my own mind, in the spaces where the lines of science and spirituality are blurred. An intuitive search to convey and communicate one's "self" through ideas and physicalities built upon my senses of the world around me.

.... Often times I'm thinking too much.
