On the last day of the June 1, 2016 Rowing School, Tamie Stonke, one of our students, came up to me and exclaimed, "I have been rowing for 14 years, how come no one has ever taught me this stuff?" This is the third year I have been fortunate to be an instructor in the Northwest Rafting Company Class III Rowing School. Three years ago my wife Susan and I were talking to Zach Collier the owner of Northwest Rafting Company in his Hood River office...

Read Chrissy's article about our recent exploration of Oregon's Josephine Creek. #kalmiopsisrivers
Located just to the south of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, Josephine Creek is a remote and stunning tributary to the Illinois River. Paddling this creek has been an alluring, yet challenging goal, pieced together over the last few years by several motivated individuals. I am fortunate to have been part of this story by enjoying a sunny first descent of the 2.6 miles above previously ran sections. Although Southern Oregon is home to several kayakers ...

Join us for our annual "Bluegrass on Whitwater" trip!
Join us for our annual "Bluegrass on Whitewater" trip featuring Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum on the famous Rogue River. We have yet to find a better combination than rafting down the river by day and listening to Laurie and Tom's music by night. Laurie and Tom come back to the Rogue River each summer for it's beautiful riverside camps, great weather, and abundant wildlife. They love soaking in the wilderness of one of their favorite rivers and play...

What do you think of my blog post about the wrathful deities of Bhutan?
The Wrathful Deities of Bhutan. — Zach / Sunday, November 23, 2014. The wrathful deities are a form that Buddhas or Bodhisattvas (gods) may take to scare off, subdue demons, or remind people to be good. They most often stand in the warrior pose (Pratyalidhasana), are surrounded by flames, ...

Have you done the Rogue River?
The Rogue River is a southern Oregon gem, and classic multi-day river trip. The Rogue attracts many new boaters each year because of its Class II-III rapids, great weather, camps, and side hikes. There is so much to do while floating the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. Hiking opportunities are endless. Here are a handful of hints, helpful land marks, and things not to miss to get ready for your first Rogue adventure. Grave Creek Bridge This is a pop...

June is a great time to visit the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, but also very unpredictable. Here are some tips to help you plan your trip. Snowpack and Water Flows You'll probably check the snowpack almost every day from now until your trip. I suggest visting the Banner Summit Snow Station page to see how this year compares to an "average" year. You'll also probably check the flows every...

This was a special trip down a unique creek in Southern Oregon.
Rough and Ready Creek is a tributary of the upper Illinois River. I fell in love with it after my initial visit in 2011 and subsequently returned three more times to paddle this uniquely special creek. My most recent expedition with NWRC guides Nate Wilson and Ryan Saevitz involved carrying our gear for a day and a half to paddle it’s remote upper reaches. The most challenging part of running this upper section is being there when the conditions ...
