Pumped to be writing a regular column for +Inc.. My first post covers PR tips for startups that I've put to use at +Canva

Here are the main reasons why media coverage is essential:

Brand recognition. Media coverage is one the best ways to boost your profile. Everyone knows what Facebook and Google do. Why? Because they have a strong brand.

Attract new users. Every start-up dreams of rapid growth. PR can be an effective way to generate sign-ups and increase sales.
Investor interest. Publicizing your story can build interest among investors. It also helps if people know who you are before you pitch them.

Raise profile with potential partners. People need to trust you before they're going to be interested in partnering. Social proof provides confidence to potential partners.

Recruit great people. Hiring great staff is a challenge for every startup. You're brand new, you're unknown. Media coverage helps distinguish yourself from all the other startups vying for attention.

Great tips for creating content that gets shared

6 Steps to Create Viral Content
Tips from +Jonah Berger, the NY Best Selling Author of “Contagious – Why Things Catch On."

Six key steps to drive people to talk and share
• Social Currency:  It’s all about people talking about things to make themselves look good, rather than bad.
• Triggers:  The idea of “top of mind, tip of tongue.”
• Ease for Emotion:  When we care, we share.
• Public:  When we can see other people doing something, we’re more likely to imitate it.
• Practical Value:  We share information to help others, to make them better off.
• Stories:  How we share things that are often wrapped up in stories or narratives.

Have you tried these methods with your content marketing? What works for you?

From +VentureBeat " Canva, the web-based graphic design platform, has just raised an additional $3.6 million in funding.

Canva makes it simple for people without a design background to create high-quality graphics using a drag-and-drop tool and its robust gallery of photos, illustrations, and fonts. The end result can be used in print or online.

Along with the funding news, Canva also announced its new Canva Button plugin that third-party websites can install. This allows visitors to websites with the button installed to create custom graphics without having to leave the site. The button targets sites that allow people to upload their own content. Site visitors can create graphics using all the features Canva provides without leaving the third-party site.

Canva launched just 11 months ago and has since grown its user base to 600,000 strong. Those users have collectively created over 3.5 million designs."
