I'm a Site Reliability Engineer and a Go developer.
Introduction
Hi. I'm a Systems Engineer, born in Brazil and living in Zurich with my wife Carla and our two boys.

Things I like to do in my free time:
  • read books. I've been reading quite a lot since I bought a Kindle. See my library in the LibraryThing.
  • write simple open source programs, mostly in the Go programming language. #golang
  • travel. Our family is slowly discovering Europe.
  • electronic games
Most of my public posts are in English, but I may occasionally write something in Portuguese. You can use a Google Chrome extension to translate such posts, if you want.

Do this now. It's easy.

PSA (and hat to +Pim van Pelt who reminded me): if you use Google services at all, please visit

https://google.com/takeout

Takeout is one of the coolest things that Google does. It's a backup of almost all of the data that is yours and is about you, ready for you to take with you if ever you want or need to leave your Google account. All the email in your gmail account (in mbox format!) all your photos synced from the photos app, all your search history, files in drive... you get the idea.

It's your data and a bunch of hard working folks at Google made sure you could get it whenever you want. And the new year is a good time to make a backup of your own.

So do that. Do it now. It's not that hard and it's totally worth it.

I'm vacationing in Brazil. It took me 8 years living abroad to properly notice the beauty and amazing diversity of plants and animals here in the Cerrado.

quote: "When the cost of any input falls so precipitously, there are two other well-established economic implications. First, we will start using prediction to perform tasks where we previously didn’t. Second, the value of other things that complement prediction will rise."

This is the best comedy scene of 2016. Lady Florence's signing practice, with her husband, her maestro teacher, and a pianist who wasn't previously warned of her complete awfulness as a singer. But she was extremely rich and generous, so nobody told her how bad she sang, so she kept singing in public - all the way to the Carnegie Hall. And this all really happened. The real world's Florence Foster Jenkins' signing is immortalized in recordings available in public domain and on YouTube. Hilarious.

Killer ways whales are our aquatic cousins, essentially.
The rare sighting occurred in California's Monterey Bay.

I love magic tricks and this was as fun as mysterious. Very few people fool these guys.

+Bruno Albuquerque what I mean to say it is that once you see it you can't unsee the fact that he's arranging cards extremely quickly under the deck.

BTW I think I agree with some of the comments that Penn and Teller probably knew what he was doing, but his trick was so absurdly smooth that they gave him a generous pass.

I am a huge fan of +Stanislas Dehaene and all research he does. Quote from an article published today:

the authors developed machine learning algorithms to decode the content of these images directly from these large and complex neuroimaging data.

The thing I'm curious about is: are we going to be able to understand how the brain encodes images and create our own code that does it? Machine learn models that we can't understand are so uncool. See also: https://github.com/mne-tools/mne-python
A team of scientists has mapped out how our brains process visuals we don't even know we've seen, indicating that the neuronal encoding and maintenance of subliminal images is more substantial than previously thought.

There are so many good things about this video. The great music. Elton John's voice. The cheery vibe that doesn't match the sadness of the music. And one or two people who are supposed to be dancing but clearly have no idea how to follow the rhythm :-).

Interesting bundle. The bash cookbook was probably one of the most important books I've read when learning Linux stuff.

Unix, I nix. We called up our friends at O'Reilly to put together this bundle of Unix (and Linux and more) resources for all. Find your nutshell reference, your pocket guide, and your power tools here in the Humble Book Bundle: Unix presented by O'Reilly!

I feel like I should buy that just out of respect for skills I've lost. At one point I owned paper copies of all but 2 of them (although older versions).
