I'm a Site Reliability Engineer and a Go developer.
Introduction
Hi. I'm a Systems Engineer, born in Brazil and living in Zurich with my wife Carla and our two boys.

Things I like to do in my free time:
  • read books. I've been reading quite a lot since I bought a Kindle. See my library in the LibraryThing.
  • write simple open source programs, mostly in the Go programming language. #golang
  • travel. Our family is slowly discovering Europe.
  • electronic games
Most of my public posts are in English, but I may occasionally write something in Portuguese. You can use a Google Chrome extension to translate such posts, if you want.
Education

Pokemon Go was apparently a good test for Google Cloud and for the trend of applying the SRE engagement model to google cloud customers.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (the animation TV series) is on Amazon Prime and is totally worth watching. It's an epic with very sweet characters and story.

On the other hand, The Legend of Korra - the follow-up series - isn't nearly as good. I'm on the second season but might stop watching it - it's not working for me.

I found Legend of Korra much more compelling (although I loved them both): Korra's setting, the manifestation of 'magic' in the industrial age - super interesting.

I love how Scott makes snarky remarks about the science in the game..

Finally edited together the interesting bits from some NMS exploration.

I'm making use of Scaleway's dirty cheap servers to test Ansible roles using Vagrant and VirtualBox, but I needed to jump some hurdles because they use a custom kernel. Here's a script to make things easier.

The experiment has not been independently reproduced yet, but it's very interesting.

Quote: He's been able to show that when the magnetic field is rotating counterclockwise, there's a drop in participants' alpha waves
A researcher in US thinks he might have finally found evidence of humanity's sixth sense - the ability to detect, in some subconscious way, Earth's magnetic field. The ability to sense Earth's magnetic field has been confirmed in birds, insects,...

This is very alarming. 35% of the coral in the central area of the Great Barrier Reef has died in the last few months. Quote: "This year is the third time in 18 years that the Great Barrier Reef has experienced mass bleaching due to global warming, and the current event is much more extreme than we've measured before.
At least 35% of corals in the northern and central parts of Australia's Great Barrier Reef have been destroyed by mass bleaching, scientists warn.

Counting the days

i09's Evan Narcisse has seen the first half of Luke Cage's first season (the swine lol) and it sounds about as perfect as it could get. Fun, intelligently updated to today, and with plenty of heart and action. Can't wait! :-)

#lukecage #netflix #marvel
After watching the first seven episodes of the Luke Cage Netflix series, I can confidently say that its lead character doesn’t always feel like the Power Man who’s shown up in decades of Marvel comics. But, as this spoiler-free review will show, I like him anyway. This Luke Cage is still an everyman superhero that works as a conduit to a multiplicity of black experiences.

The view from Europa must be super scary. Imagine the creation myths that Europa aliens would have to come up with to explain this giant ball covering their sky most of the day (assuming Europa even rotates, it probably doesn't).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europa_(moon) says it's tidally locked to Jupiter. I would really love to read a short sci-fi story about human-mind-like aliens in Europa split between the two different skies, their rivalries and differences in thought. Like "we hate the free-sky guys" or "we have always been at war with the blocked-sky-ers." Or differences in thought between both halves. Or even physical differences, caused by the radiation in the blocked-sky half, and lack of visible light in the free-sky half.

inb4 European aliens? Does the EU have a Männer in Schwarz department? :)

I understand maybe 50% of the article but the angry tone of the writing is very relatable. And the content is depressing but important.
People joked for a while about how insurers were pulling out of Obamacare markets so fast we might end up with areas in which there were no insurers at all. It's no joke anymore: with Aetna's massive withdrawal yesterday from the Affordable Care Act marketplace, Pinal County, Arizona, the third [...]

Now I understand why using health care in the US feels like getting scammed. This is a really good article. Want to change the system? Good luck fighting a $1 trillion dollar industry.
Print this Section My goal for this website was to try to untangle and explain a system that has an enormous financial impact on everyone, but makes almost no sense to anyone. It’s a system with hidden costs, enormous mark ups to discourage direct payment and a labyrinth of billing and reimbursement schedules that almost guarantees that no person directly ...

I don't know. I think I would need to spend some time looking into the interplay between government regulation and insurance. My feeling is that private insurance plays little role in price setting as it does here. When the government is the sole arbiter of price it can set it arbitrarily and thus lower because, 'why not?'
