Sony A7r with the Canon 11-24mm f4 : Ultra-wide angle on a high megapixel setup

I have been really lucky recently. After having my hands on the Tamron 15-30mm on the A7r and A7 II (https://plus.google.com/113865064683867423186/posts/h9Cyv4FUYwH), I was able to use the internationally awaited Canon 11-24mm f4 on the A7r (to test its high resolution). This beast has an unconventional focal length (I am really looking trying one of them in some closed environment). Here is my first impression review :)..

Lens :

The lens is as big as the Tamron 15-30mm f2.8, with an impressive front lens element. Minimum width is similar to the 17-40mm (I have uploaded few pictures to compare them).

Unlike the Tamron, changing between focal lengths was surprisingly easy… Same goes for the focusing ring. IMO, this lens gave me the same feeling that a 17-40mm f4 and 16-35mm f2.8 (I really like the handling of this lens over the Tamron)

Few downside of this lens :
- Like the tamron, the prominent front element make this lens really fragile. Bad thing happen (while shooting, you don’t realise how close you are to any other element in the scene. If you look at the picture of the bus I was only at 2-4meters from it), if you get this lens, don’t forget to insure it.
- No possibility to put any conventional filters - yet. However, Canon thought a lot about us :) :  you can use gelatine filters on the back of the lens ! (big plus compared to the Tamron).
- This setup is front heavy. However I liked the handling on the A7r, and it's even better with this Canon lens.

Stabilization :

Well you don’t really need stabilization with this setup. Shooting at 1/10s at 11mm was relatively easy and most of my shots were sharp (no motion at 1:1 on 36MP stills). If you have a A7 II, then you should be able to go much lower than 1/10s.

Image quality :

One of the most important point : Image quality ! I have to say, it is a really close call between the Tamron 15-30mm and the Canon 11-24mm. Here is why :

- Canon 11-24mm is significantly wider. This will probably be less noticeable outdoors than indoor.
At 11mm, edges are soft due to extreme distortion (but this is what you would expect from a 11mm). Center shows sharp results (but no extreme sharpness).  I never tried
the Sigma 12-24mm, so I can't really compare both. Comparatively speaking, distortion looked similar at 11mm than the Canon 17-40mm at 17mm, which is somewhat disappointing - but also impressive at such focal length.

From14mm to 24mm, I noticed a much better image quality across the frame. Distortion is still present but way more controlled than at 11mm. I would be tempted to say that the Tamron is sharper, but such statement would be premature (more testing needed). You won't be disappointed by the IQ from center to edges !

Pros :
- Unique focal length. Good for landscape photography (especially seascape and cityscape). For those who only have a 16 17mm, 11mm is a big change !
- Good handling on a A7r/A7II - excellent build quality.
- Possibility to put gelatine filters !
Cons :
- Pricey ! Price close to a Zeiss Otus. It's 3x the price of a 16-35mm f2.8.
- Only f4.
- Fragile/Heavy.

I see this lens being used for seascape and cityscape. 11mm provides a lot of creativity ! However I don't see myself using that often.

Check the uploaded pictures :)

Note : Thanks Georges camera for landing me this model. I will try to send more pictures soon. Apparently they have 8 lenses in stocks right now, which is surprising, given the lack of  availability worldwide ! (if you go their, say hello :))
