4: Help Get Your Accident Medical Bills Paid and Decrease Your Liability

Did you know there is a portion of you automobile policy that not only allows you to go to any doctor you want regardless of your health insurance but pays your bills? Your car insurance protects your car, not the people inside of it. "Medical Payments" (often called Med Pay) or “Personal Injury Protection” (PIP) covers the medical payments of all passengers in your vehicle if they are injured in an accident.

Med Pay will cover the medical costs resulting from an automobile accident, regardless of who was at fault. Only injuries caused directly by the accident will be covered by Med Pay. Keep in mind Med Pay is purchased on a “by vehicle” basis. This means if you have two cars you must purchase Med Pay for both if you wish to be covered in either car. It’s also very important to point out that Med Pay is not a replacement for health insurance. Med Pay coverage is strictly limited to injuries that occur during auto accidents and almost always has a limit. Your health insurance can also cover your injuries if you’re in a car accident; the difference is that Med Pay will cover the other people in the car.

Additionally, Med Pay or PIP covers your medical costs from an accident at 100%, usually without deductibles and co-payments. If you use your health insurance to cover your accident-related medical expenses your may be subject to plan restrictions, high deductible, co-payments and re-payment. What does all that mean for you? It means that at the end of your accident related treatment you may not have any outstanding doctor bills to pay and so have decreased your liability. This low cost insurance can be an effective way to pay for your treatment bills.

Check your automobile declaration sheet or call your insurance agent to find out your specific coverage’s. We are not insurance agents, so it is recommended you contact your insurance agent to find the right coverage to fit your individual needs.

If you or anyone you know has been involved in an automobile accident the key to recover is early evaluation and treatment. Don’t wait to see if goes away call our office immediately at 770-505-5665.

3: Factors Affecting a Whiplash Injury

Did you know that being prepared for an automobile accident impact can help reduce the severity of your injuries? Being able to brace yourself prior to an impact makes you stiffer and can help decrease the acceleration of your head, neck and body. On the flip side, being unaware or unprepared for an upcoming impact can increase the severity of your injuries.

When you are aware and are able to brace yourself for an impending accident/impact, you make yourself stiffer and reduce your acceleration in the vehicle. Interestingly when subjects were asked to brace themselves for a possible accident most moved their heads forward (not correct). When attempting to brace for an accident, if you have time and remember, place your head against the head restraint and push your body into the seat. Additionally, when a rear-end accident is about to happen, try to apply the brakes as hard as possible. This will make your car more resistant to acceleration forces and may also help to prevent a double impact by getting pushed into the car ahead of you.

Women in general are more frequently and more seriously injured by whiplash than men due to the differences in muscular bulk and the female’s smaller bony structures. These factors result in less protection of the neck to the abnormal forces such as those that occur in a whiplash-type of injury.

Here are some other factors affecting a whiplash injury: whiplash pain/symptoms persisting beyond 6 months (43% failed to recover on average), significant ligament, disc, nerve or joint injury, delay in initiating treatment, occupant age over 65, head restraint more than 2" away from occupant's head, occupant in a small car, degenerative changes, prior whiplash injury, having initial arm pain, numbness, tingling symptoms and a cervical collar used for more than 2 weeks, just to name a few!

If you or anyone you know has been involved in an automobile accident the key to recover is early evaluation and treatment. Don’t wait to see if goes away call our office immediately at 770-505-5665.

2: Make Sure to Protect Your Children in an Automobile Accident

Did you know that your children are particularly prone to injury in automobile accidents? This is because neither the car seat nor the seat belt/shoulder harness was optimally designed to fit them properly. Additionally, children are more susceptible to trauma because they have smaller neck sizes, their bones are not completely fused, parts of their spine are not fully developed and their ligaments are looser. One study reported that up to 80% of children were not restrained properly inside the vehicle. This was due partly because of a lack of knowledge by the parent on proper child placement. Please take the time to learn how to install the car seat and position your children appropriately.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that in almost every case of infant or child fatality due to passenger side airbags deployment, it was due to either negligence or inappropriate use of either the carrier (not placed in the rear as recommended) or the child was in the front seat and not wearing the proper restraints.

Depending on the age of your children, after an accident they may have a difficult time verbalizing their symptoms or may not complain specifically about pain. Pay attention to your children, especially any changes in their attitude, mood, school or play patterns. Alterations in your child’s normal behavior may be their way of informing you something is wrong.

Perhaps because of a child’s neck anatomy and physiology they can be more susceptible to spinal cord injuries. These injuries can appear hours or sometimes days after the initial trauma and may not appear on x-ray.

If your child has evidence of bruising from the seatbelt (seat belt sign) or are complaining of pain into their arms and legs they should be evaluated immediately. Trauma to the intestines was found in 64% of the cases in which this was noted.

If you or anyone you know has been involved in an automobile accident the key to recover is early evaluation and treatment. Don’t wait to see if goes away call our office immediately at 770-505-5665

Wear Your Seat Belts and Prevent Injuries?

Did you know the risk of fatality in a crash for someone not wearing their seat belt is 5 times higher than for someone wearing their seat belt and shoulder harness? The main purpose of your seatbelt is to save your life by preventing serious and life threatening head, facial and chest trauma. However, while the seatbelt and shoulder harness are designed to save your life, they are responsible for an increase in certain injuries, which can sometimes be disabling. Studies have shown that both the seat belt and shoulder harness can increase your chances of neck, middle back, lower back and abdominal injuries.

Always wear both your seatbelt and shoulder harness and make sure your head restraint is always adjusted properly as well. One study reported that 83% of drivers with adjustable head restraints had them improperly adjusted. A good rule to follow is to make sure the top of the head restraint is level with or above the top of your head. You can measure this by placing your hand on top of your head and adjust the head restraint to be touching your hand.

Also, adjust the head restraint so that it is about 2 inches from the back of your head. The closer the back of your head to the restraint, the more effective at preventing injuries compared to those set too far back. Closer means that your head will have less distance during an impact and can potentially decrease the injury to your neck. Both the height and distance are important to decreasing the potential for injury.

FYI: Airbags do not deploy in rear-end impacts. When they deploy they do so at 165-210 mph. They are designed to be used in conjunction with the seat belt and shoulder harness system, not instead.

Accidents can happen anytime and anywhere, take these small steps to potentially avoid life threatening and serious injury. If you or anyone you know has been involved in an automobile accident the key to recover is early evaluation and treatment. Don’t wait to see if goes away call our office immediately at 770-505-5665.

(long but a great read)

When you hear the word “Chiropractor” what is the first thing that comes to mind? PAIN RELIEF!!! Right? It’s true that Chiropractic does help with musculoskeletal complaints, but that’s not what has kept Chiropractic a separate and distinct healthcare profession for the last 118 years. In the earlier part of the 20th Century people mainly came to chiropractors for infectious diseases, such as Polio and Scarlet Fever. Chiropractic wasn’t found by relieving someone’s Sciatica. It was founded in 1895 by a man named D.D. Palmer when he adjusted a deaf man and he got his hearing back! Obviously there is a lot more there than just pain relief. Below I have listed the 11 most popular reasons why people come to BACK IN LINE CHIROPRACTIC Spine and Injury.

1. Back Pain- relief and prevention-
Chiropractors are notorious for our results when it comes to resolving back pain. Even Consumer Reports rated Chiropractic the #1 solution to lower back pain over medical care, pharmaceuticals, acupuncture and physical therapy. Numerous studies show how patients seeking chiropractic care for low back pain get relief faster and the results last longer over time.

2. Neck Pain- relief and prevention-
Chiropractic’s history with neck pain is just as impressive as our results with lower back pain. Recently, ABC news conducted a study which revealed that Chiropractic adjustments are superior to pharmaceuticals and physical therapy when it comes to neck pain. Similar to the back pain studies, they found chiropractic patients recovered twice as fast as those receiving traditional medical care.

3. Pain, Strain/Sprain relief following a Motor Vehicle Accident-
Chiropractors have a long history of relieving pain and helping accident victims regain their pre-accident health. Consulting a chiropractor is always a smart move after having a car accident. A chiropractor can treat neck injuries / whiplash, back injuries, soft tissue injuries, and he is able to help you loosen stiff muscles after the vehicular accident occurs.

4. Pain,Tingling and/or Numbness in an Extremity-
These patients who are suffering with Sciatica(in legs or feet), or a Cervical Radiculopathy(in arm or hand) usually seek medical intervention first due to the pain and discomfort. They eventually find their way to the chiropractor after these methods fail and the only other alternative is surgery. Chiropractic aims to remove the pressure on the nerves affected, thereby addressing the cause instead of covering up the symptoms. In most cases, Chiropractic can delay or even eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.

5. Headaches/ Migraines- relief and prevention-
Headaches are a very common condition, but they are never “normal”. They are a sign that you have excessive stress on your central nervous system. Chiropractic has been shown to help with all sorts of headaches. From the classic Migrains to Trigeminal Neuralgia, or Tic Deloroux. Chiropractic does not treat headaches. The Adjustments remove pressure off of nerves and allow the entire body to function better. As a result, many headaches tend to dissipate or even disappear. There is also published research on it’s effectiveness. If headaches are plaguing you, Chiropractic is a logical place to start.

6. Easier Pregnancy and Labor-
Moms-to-be have been finding relief at the chiropractor for all sorts of common issues during pregnancy. Conditions such as back pain, heartburn & circulation problems all been shown to improve under chiropractic care. Patients who see chiropractors have also been shown to have shorter and less painful deliveries! This makes for happy moms, especially those choosing natural child births.

7. Improved Range of Motion and Peak Performance-
Many athletes see chiropractors on a regular basis. Professional athletes in every sport have endorsed chiropractic and given it credit, in part, to their level of success. Chiropractic helps the musculoskeletal system to perform more balanced. This tends to reduce injury and recover from it faster. People such as Tiger Woods, Jerry Rice, Evander Holyfield, Lance Armstrong and many others include Chiropractic as part of their lifestyle.

8. Healthier Children-
Mom and Dads have found relief in other ways through Chiropractic. More and more parents have been bringing their children to see the chiropractor for multiple reasons. Chiropractic care has helped many children recover from conditions such as acid reflux, ear infections, colic, asthma, ADD, ADHD and even Autism. It has an impeccable record when it comes to safety as well. Again, Chiropractic does NOT offer to diagnose or treat these conditions or any others. The chiropractic adjustment removes interferences in the central nervous system, allowing the entire body to express itself at a higher level. EVEN IN CHILDREN!

9. Relief from Menstrual Problems-
Due to the nervous system’s control over the menstrual cycle, chiropractic has helped women with not only the level of pain, but also abnormal cycles and even infertility. More mature women have also found relief in their menopausal symptoms. Are you starting to see why 80% of chiropractic patients are women?

10. Relief from Allergies-
Another issue people see chiropractors for, especially in Atlanta, is Allergies and other sinus and respiratory issues. The efficiency of your Immune System to fight off allergens and infection is largely dependent on the integrity of your Central Nervous System. Chiropractic patients perceive less overall symptoms due to seasonal allergies without the need for over the counter medication.

11. Improved Overall Function-
As you can probably gather from the previous 9 reasons, the theme is pretty similar. The Power that Made the Body, Heals the Body. Chiropractic focuses on removing nerve interference called Subluxation, thereby improving the function and integrity of the entire body and mind. Since your Nervous System controls and coordinates all function, stresses in that system can create a state of dis-ease, which leads to dysfunction and eventually a symptom. Chiropractors do not treat symptoms. We focus on the cause and on removing the interferences in the normal transmission of mental impulses from brain to body, and body to brain. Then your body can get all the information it needs in order to function the best that it can. That is why 80% of the patients I see on a daily basis are feeling great! They come in for regular monthly visits in order to maintain that level of health and expression.

So, you see. There is much more to chiropractic than just a “crick” in the neck. Unfortunately that’s what most people think. Trends these days are changing though. More people are seeing the problem with over medicating and covering up symptoms. People are turning to more natural forms of healthcare and focusing on prevention through diet and exercise. Chiropractic is the leading alternative to the Allopathic, or Medical paradigm, and they’ve been teaching this lifestyle for over a century. So, don’t wait until you’re in pain to see a chiropractor. That’s like waiting until you have a cavity to see your dentist!

Chiropractic Care and Allergies

Spring has arrived, and while this is a pleasant time of renewal and growth in many a sense, it can also bring about a number of allergens that cause unpleasant symptoms and an all-around sense of illness and fatigue. Allergies can be especially prominent in the spring and fall, but they can affect people year around. Whether you’re sensitive to pollen, dust, mold, dander or other allergens, your symptoms could all point to one culprit.

For many of people who suffer from allergies, symptom relief may have been sought in drugs that ease coughing, sneezing, watery eyes and congestion. The problem with this approach is that all of these and other symptoms are the result of an improper immune system response. Although a decongestant or antihistamine can minimize symptoms for a time, eventually they’ll return. And until the underlying cause is addressed, what else could you expect?

If you’re seeking effective and natural relief from allergies, turn to the state of your immune system. Subluxations, lacking nutrition and a number of internal issues can all interfere with the body’s innate healing response. As a result, the body exhibits poor immune system function and experiences allergy flare-ups. Chiropractic care provides a number of treatments that address these issues, and helps to prevent them.

Chiropractic treatment of allergies is really more of a treatment for the overall body. By addressing subluxations that interfere with the body’s immune, respiratory, and other systems, the internal functions that keep us healthy are naturally restored. Various adjustment techniques and spinal manipulation can be used to correct blockages, nerve pressure and misalignments. These treatments can also help to release stress and contribute to better rest, which are essential to recovering from illness and staying well.

One of the primary advantages of allergy treatment through chiropractic is that it’s more natural and manageable than the use of allergy medications, and is often more safe for children. By strengthening the body’s defenses rather than reactively correcting symptoms, you can expect to feel better faster and be less likely to deal with reoccurring symptoms--- so long as your body is functioning properly.
