Deep View Of Orion
Except for my mosaic this is my widest and probably deepest view ever of The Great Orion Nebula combining data captured from my Bortle 4.0 sky and amateur backyard observatory in Fremont, Michigan from 2010 through to 2014 using QHY9 and QHY11 Mono CCD’s, 5 inch TMB 130, 3.6" TMB92 refractor and Takahashi E180 Astrograph. Collected using LRGB + H-A filters  and covering 4.08 x 2.91 degrees of sky.

The constellation of Orion is home to many treasures, including the Orion Nebula seen here.  A small part of the immense Orion Molecular Cloud, M42 is perhaps the most studied extra-solar object in the sky. intricate and picturesque filaments of dust.

Other images in my Orion collection can be seen here https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.549341561779458.1073741827.390932634287019&type=3

RIP Cecil.

Today I read about a lion by the name of Cecil, a beloved 13-year-old lion of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, had been killed for fun, for pleasure. When I saw these links being shared on my way to an appointment, I wanted to avoid opening it because I knew what would happen, but I couldn't. I opened it, read it, and that was it. Tears. Couldn't stop them. Because I can't fathom how someone could do something so horrible to a beautiful animal. What's more? This man, Walter Palmer, a dentist, paid PLENTY (some $55,000 US) in order to have the lion lured in for the kill. HE PAID TO TAKE THE LIFE OF AN INNOCENT ANIMAL. And Palmer didn't just kill Cecil; he killed all Cecil's cubs (over a dozen) by taking their protection away. And this is not the first time he's done this. This is his 23rd or 24th kill, but with the dangers that killing animals causes to their young, Palmer has killed MANY MORE than that.

Palmer says now that he did not know that Cecil was a favorite, and regrets killing the lion now. But he says this is an activity he "loves" and had practiced "legally" and "responsibly". First of all, it doesn't matter if Cecil was a favorite or not--he should NOT have done it AT ALL. There's a HUGE problem when the word "love" is tied to taking the lives of innocent animals, and when you can do so "legally". There's NOTHING "responsible" about killing endangered animals for sport. It's sick, and needs to be stopped.

I almost lost faith in humanity when I read this, until I reminded myself of the outpouring of support for Cecil and condemning of Palmer's actions. Wildlife is precious. Something needs to be done to stop people from hunting for "sport". There is no sport in killing animals. There once roamed some 200,000 lions in Africa, but today, there are only 30,000 left. Hunting for "sport" is putting endangered species on the brink of extinction. Something needs to be done to put a stop to hunting for sport. It's cruel, it's sick, and it's wrong.

I posted this because as many of you already know, I hold animals and wildlife very dear to my heart, and I could no longer bear without speaking up about it. And as I wrote this, I had to fight through tears many times. I couldn't bear to post the image of Cecil being pictured as Palmer's "trophy" kill, so instead, I opted for this one, when Cecil was beautiful and alive. I immediately signed the petition to have this man pay for his sickening actions (thank you for sharing it, Rhiannon). When I signed it this afternoon after having read it, there were just about 40,000 signatures. Now, there are 185,000 (and this has increased from about 173,000 just over the time it took me to write this; it'll probably be more than 185,000 when you open the link). I'll post the link so that you too can help bring justice to Cecil.

RIP, beautiful Cecil. RIP to ALL the animals that Palmer has taken the lives of. Gone but never forgotten <3

About Cecil and some of the other exotic animals Palmer took the lives of (this one is a difficult, there are LOTS of images of all the exotic and beautiful animals this sick man has killed for "sport" (I shudder when I pair words like "sport" with "hunting" or "killing")): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/zimbabwe/11767119/Cecil-the-lions-killer-revealed-as-American-dentist.html

About Cecil and Palmer's "reaction" to finding out he's killed a local favorite: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-33695872?ocid=socialflow_facebook

Another one--5 facts aboutwhat Palmer did to Cecil, and what he's done in the past: http://heavy.com/news/2015/07/walter-palmer-minnesota-dentist-hunter-killed-cecil-the-lion-dead-shot-zimbabwe-illegal-arrested-photos-video-cubs-theo-bronchorst-trymore-ndlovu/

No animal should be hunted just for a "trophy" or "sport". I am not a hunter because I do not want to think about the pain I would be putting an animal through. I believe that animals should only be hunted for food. If he is unethical doing this, what else does he do. I hope that the people that come to him for dental work realize that it was their money that help him do this and I hope that now his dentistry practice fails.
