New blog post: Have the Money Talk Before the Marriage Talk - More and more of my friends are tying the knot and as an individual with an interest in personal finance, I think it is important to reinforce that everyone should have the money talk before the marriage talk.  Because marriage and joining your life together is a decision involving consent of all parties (well, in most countries anyways) it is important to understand everything about your partner, especially when you start thinki...

New blog post: September 2015 net worth update (0.6%) - That positive streak didn’t last very long.  The markets have not done well and I think I took about a $8000$10k hit to my portfolio so far.  It’s quite painful but I know that it can be (and likely will be) worse.  I will continue to re-evaluate my portfolio and transition stocks to my Investment Game Plan in previous posts. I didn’t go crazy with Portland shopping but did buy a few things for around $180 USD and made the quintessen...

New blog post: WARNING: Falling Knives and Raging Bears! - It truly amazes me how predictably irrational human beings can be (myself certainly included at times). We like to think of ourselves as logical and rationale creatures, yet our actions beg to differ.  Nowhere is this more apparent than in the stock market.  We have centuries of evidence that tells us that markets go up and markets go down – sometimes quite drastically.  Yet we also know that every single time that markets have cras...

New blog post: Young’s Investment Portfolio Makeover - I suppose the impetus to start a slow process of my investment portfolio makeover was from a number of different events that made me go “huh… maybe I should do something about that”. Initially I was really happy with the plan for the extra money I had saved up if and when I needed a down payment for a home with my future prince charming.  However, as the months and years passed, the plan didn’t cut it for me anymore. Here are a Few Reas...

New blog post: Hong Kong on the Cheap -   When people think of Hong Kong, they think of it as an expensive place to travel to.  Hong Kong can be as expensive as you want it to (think pricey glamorous restaurants at $100 USD per person) or as cheap as you want it to (think $0.40 tram rides or $5 wonton noodles). On a recent trip to Asia, I used Hong Kong as a base to go to the Philippines.  I had thought it would be an expensive adjunct to the Philippines but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it...

New blog post: August 2015 Net Worth Update: $371,690 - Phew, positive again.  I knew I was saving a lot this month but I didn’t know that it would surpass the loss I was having in my investment portfolio.  My RRSP did well this month but mainly because of the currency exchange I figure. I am planning to go to Portland in August, hopefully I won’t go crazy shopping there.  August is my non-shopping ban month.  I did pretty good last month, I think. As some of you following may know, my goal...
