We will have our climbing team, The Ascenders, doing demos, climbing and answering questions as well as a free morning yoga class. There will also be an intro to climbing class and performance by local rock star Matt Hay. Come join us for a fun filled day of climbing as well as celebrating our journey through the past ten years and into the next! RSVP to our Facebook event and receive double entry into the raffle! Climbing space is limited so get there early and “hang out” all day! Saturday, January 18th, 2014 from 9am to 7pm is definitely a day not to be missed.

AZ on the Rocks was started by brothers Kevin J. Berk and Kent Berk, and their mother, Joyce, in 2003, after they became passionate about climbing.  With all of their children (Joyce’s grandchildren), one of the things that attracted them to climbing was that it is a great activity for the whole family.  Kevin J. Berk, El-Presidente, says, “Indoor rock climbing is for everyone.  We offer a world-class gym with climbing routes for all ages, and beginners through advanced climbers.  One of our missions is to continue to attract new climbers through exciting programming – camps, kids’ activities, AZ's largest youth climbing team, birthday parties, after school classes, instruction, and other events and programs.”

Since opening, AZ on the Rocks has had more than 180,000 visitors and now has 1,000 active members.

The dramatic growth in climbing is no surprise given its thrill and health benefits.  “It is one of very few activities that provide a vigorous mind and total body workout,” says Kevin J. Berk.  “Climbing is an excellent way to exercise almost every muscle group, build muscle strength, endurance, balance and flexibility, all while also providing a rare thrill and mental challenges, promoting team building and problem solving skills.”  According to reports on www.healthatoz.com, a 140 pound person can burn up to 700 calories an hour, while someone weighing 190 pounds can burn up to 974 calories an hour while climbing.  One study by Wayne L. Westcott, PhD, fitness research director at the South Shore YMCA in Quincy, MA, found that even a “limited amount of simulated rock climbing produced significant improvements in body composition, muscle strength, joint flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.”

Indoor rock climbing, just like outdoor climbing, requires climbers to cling to a series of strategically placed hand and footholds to ascend or traverse the faux rock face. The hand and footholds on indoor climbing walls, unlike real rock, are fully adjustable so as to allow the gym to present new challenges (i.e. problems or routes) for climbers. The majority of beginners learn top rope climbing whereby one end of a long rope is hooked onto the climber’s harness, looped over an anchor at the top of the wall and then attached to a pulley-type mechanism (the belay device) controlled by the partner on the ground. The partner "spots" the climber by taking up and adjusting the slack so as to stop a fall and lower the climber to safety.

In addition to annual, semi-annual and monthly memberships, AZ on the Rocks offers day use and group passes, and has a variety of after school, summer, and instructional programs, corporate team building and competitions.
