"And it's important to realize that this is part of Amazon's strategy. They want the people who aren't top performers to leave. But they also want the people who are top performers to stay. So they are likely to make the lives of poor performers a bit miserable, but they are also going to do everything possible to make sure the top performers feel happy and fulfilled. That's one reason it's hard to say what it's like to work at Amazon — it's different for different people. And it's also a reason top performers at Amazon are so annoyed by this article — it genuinely doesn't describe their experience."
How to parse the Times’s exposé of Amazon, and Amazon’s response.

One intervention for night terrors is to awake the child just before the night terror. Ugh. Sounds painful.

Anyway, automation FTW.

"The pair spent months studying “scheduled awakenings,” a method for alleviating night terrors that dates back to the 1980s. In order for the approach to work, parents must awaken the child themselves before the night terror.

Rink said many parents did not stick it out as it’s a rigorous program. But new mobile and sensor-based technology could be used to rouse the child awake so they don’t have to."

Clare and Bill Lloyd from San Jose, Calif. said the Lully system helped alleviate their daughter's night terrors.

What a dilemma.

Because Singapore is a nice place to live, it causes foreigners to come to Singapore to live, who then consume and end up driving up prices. The increase in cost of living makes it less nice place for locals, which causes the government to try and improve the situation, thereby making Singapore a nicer place to live...
Despite having one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, Singaporeans, believe it or not, have a few complaints.  Some of these are political, but others are economic, and many intertwine the two factors. Here’s a simple model […]

I suppose the difference with California is that most of the billionaires are home grown? Whereas the billionaires in sg are not? Is that true?

Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning. The Instinctive Drowning Response -- so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like what most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or ...

"Buyers in Hong Kong are snapping up “Mosquito Apartments”—180-square-foot [sic] flats in luxury high-rises. These tiny dwellings are selling for more than $500,000 in some areas."

Typical New York parking space is 160 square-feet.

Much like London and New York, demand from investors is pushing up prices of even tiny apartments

Good man.
Lobsang Phuntsok, founder of the Jhamtse Gatsal community, with Tashi. For years, Lobsang Phuntsok, a Tibetan Buddhist monk, dreamed of creating a safe haven for unwanted children in Arunachal Pradesh, the remote Himalayan region where he was born in 1971. Now Jhamtse Gatsal—Tibetan for Garden ...

Excited to see this product at this stage. A payment / authentication system that does not require the teller to verify or the user to jump through hoops (unlock phone, etc.) is important.

"But Asian delicacies can be hard to come by. Few Americans are likely to see durian or bamboo shoots in their local shop. Some specialty ingredients are only to be found at a premium in up-market grocery stores, or miles away, in ethnic markets in older Asian neighbourhoods."

Introduction
Father of a boy and a girl. Software engineer. Wanna-be baker and meditator.

Born and raised in Singapore but somehow stumbled to University of Waterloo in Canada where I somehow stepped out with a double degree in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science.

I returned to Singapore to fulfill my military service obligations and after that mind numbing ordeal, I took the easier route and got a PhD in CS from the National University of Singapore (NUS). I joined Google as a software engineer in 2007. I work in Search. It's a pretty fun place to work - you should join me here.
