How do you estimate the worth of a domain name?

I want to share a little story: 3 years ago I inquired about a domain name I wanted to buy for a school project.

Sure enough it was taken but not used, someone is sitting on it hoping to hit the jackpot for it. At that time when I was told the price (in the thousands) I gave up because there is no way I could spend that much money on it.

Ever since, and for 3 years now, I keep getting e-mails from that broker asking me if I want to buy it. Of course I deleted those e-mail and didn't even bother to reply.

2 weeks ago, in reply to his latest follow up e-mail, I offered $50 for it. The broker came back and said "This domain name market value is in the thousands, your offer is not serious".
I did a keyword search with Google Keyword planner and found the global average monthly searches is less than 500!!!!
So no one is interested in 3 years, number of searches is almost nothing and "it has a market value in the thousands" ???

At business school I learned that the real value of something is how much one is willing to pay for it.

What do you think? how do you estimate the fair value of a domain name?

Hey +Richard Chapo , same story. In layman's terms can you start a post on 'primary authorities" as it relates to a business owner and their struggle for Google rankings. After sustenance of course.

IMPORTANT!!! Massive Security Bug In OpenSSL Could Affect A Huge Chunk Of The Internet. This bug was announced last night and got the entire Internet industry scrambling.

Through a bug that security researchers have dubbed “Heartbleed“, it seems that it’s possible to trick almost any system running any version of OpenSSL from the past 2 years into revealing chunks of data sitting in its system memory.

For the Non-technical / Information Security people: If your website is using HTTPS (The green bar) to secure communication with your website (for example if you have a shopping cart or secure form etc.) the site may be vulnerable.

The problem is not with the website, it is with the hosting server.

You can use the links below to check if your hosting server is vulnerable. If it is vulnerable open a ticket with your hosting provider ASAP.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me here on the forum or via e-mail: yaron@elevitator.com

I will post more information and updates on my website later tonight: http://www.elevitator.com

Hi. Since I don't do shopping cart, etc I don't believe mg site is affected. On the other hand I do use dropbox and many secure sites. Should we be taking particular steps in that regard

Moment of truth: I pretty much gave up on SEO for small business. I am tired chasing the constant changes by google and let's admit it no one really knows what he is doing... Here I said it :-)

It became like the stock market, most people buy stock (not that they know anything about it but they heard it is a good stock) and they sit and pray it will go up. In the SEO works there are many SEO brokers who will try to sell you their services (stocks) but they are the one who make the money not the business owner.

Like previous posts here, I get lots of calls and e-mails from "Google SEO experts", one of them even guaranteed me the the results!!! I asked him to put his money where his mouth was, I told him I will contract him exclusively to do all my SEO work for free but I will pay him 35% commission for every lead that converts to business. Guess what.... never heard from him again.

If you are a small business owner and you have to watch your expenses closely, I am not sure SEO is your route. It all depends on your type of business and in many cases traditional marketing together with some paid adwords will work much better for you.
I much rather leverage social networks, yelp and other similar services. it feels like I get better business results.

Thoughts?

+John Allen GREAT POINT:
"SEO is like every profession there are the good, bad, and indifferent. Today most websites need a little SEO help. Some more than others. But any good SEO person should focus on asking more questions and learning about the potential client, then pushing anyone to sign a contract. How can anyone know they can offer what a client needs until the know what the does, and what they have (website, business, etc)"
