I like the new +Google+ "Stories" feature. Though it is still a bit rough in the way that it combines things, I appreciate the power of automatically organizing different media and info (GPS data, Google Now info) in order to create these slideshows.

However, there is one piece of automation that was quite alarming to me. Over Passover, we spent a couple of days at my parent's apartment in Jerusalem. For what it's worth, they live in a section of Jerusalem that has been part of Israel since 1948 (in other words, the only people who will say that it is not part of Israel are those that think that Israel should not exist). So I was quite shocked when I saw that Google had decided to label this portion of my stay as having taken place in "Jerusalem, State of Palestine". (see attached photo)

To be clear, this should have said "Jerusalem, Israel". And just about any other label would have been better. The head-in-the-sand approach of the state department of pretending that Jerusalem is not in any country is wrong by omission, but at least it is not actively lying. And even writing "Jerusalem, Palestinian Territories" would have stopped before granting statehood to a terrorist body. And even if you believe that "State of Palestine" is the correct moniker - to use it as the label for a location in West Jerusalem that has been part of Israel sovereign territory since 1948 is equivalent to declaring that Israel does not have a right to exist (and I know that Google is able to accurately tell where I was, based on the accuracy of Waze and Maps when I am at this location).

If this was intentional - then shame on Google for playing partner with those calling for Israel's destruction. And if this was a coding error - then shame on the +Google+ team for shoddy dev and QA work in such a critical area.

Bibi: “This incident reveals the character of the terror that we are fighting. Terrorists abduct innocent Israeli children while we give medical care in our hospitals to sick Palestinian children. That is the difference between our humane policy and the murderous terror that is attacking us.” (In fact, the wife of PA president Mahmoud Abbas underwent surgery last weekend in a Tel Aviv hospital, while the mother-in-law of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was allowed into the country two weeks ago for cancer treatment.) #BringBackOurBoys   #Israel
Until two days ago, I hadn’t spoken with Yishai Fraenkel since last August. I had just published a Forbes magazine cover story about Israeli-Palestinian joint ventures in high-tech (as well as efforts to bring Israeli Arabs and ultra-orthodox Jews into the sector), and had interviewed Yishai for it. As the [...]

The shadowy cartel of doctors that controls Medicare: In a free market society, there’s a name for this kind of thing—for when a roomful of professionals from the same trade meet behind closed doors to agree on how much their services should be worth. It’s called price-fixing. And in any other industry, it’s illegal—grounds for a federal investigation into antitrust abuse, at the least.
