Lactic acid bacteria typically contained in yoghurt and other probiotics may protect the gut against inflammatory bowel diseases. Lactocepin, an enzyme produced by the bacteria can selectively interrupt inflammatory processes by degrading specific inflammatory mediators - chemokines - that contribute to chronic inflammation and tissue damage in diseased tissue, due to the malfunctioning of the body's immune response mechanism.
