The Soviet War Memorial in Berlin’s Tiergarten is truly exotic. Its construction started right after WWII has ended, but before Potsdam Conference divided Germany into East and West. Hence the line drawn by the three moved the first of the big Berlin Soviet memorial sites from East to West, into enemy territory.

West Berlin’s Soviet heritage – the final chord of my photo series featuring “East Germany’s Soviet heritage”.

Each project has an end. Becoming featured with my project in German TV – that is MDR – is the high note I should leave with. It was pure pleasure and madness to discover a piece of history together with my fellow photographer friend Victor Boyko in a photographic as well as intellectual way before the witnesses of time will have gone forever.

In Namibia's Kunene region I visited one of the last remaining nomad tribes of Africa, the magic Himba. They settle at the Epupa Falls, a picturesque waterfall in pretty remote North Namibia that is only accessible by 4x4 jeeps.

My extensive 5-page photo reportage about the Chernobyl disaster has a look at the reactor, further abandoned small villages like Salisya and of course with a long long walk through the ghost town of Pripyat where I met a wild fox and still heavily radiating hot spots. In the end I visited one of the biggest state secrets Soviet Union once had: a giant antenna (Duga 3 woodpecker).

Let me take you to Krampnitz, a town near Potsdam, that is near Berlin again, where the Soviet army deployed a tank battalion. The military complex served as film set for "Enemy at the Gates", a Hollywood movie about Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev and the Stalingrad battle.

Introduction
The power of images is mighty and leaves no one unaffected. I am pretty aware of that. Hence I am seeing my photographs first and foremost as a document of our planet, of a culture, of a moment I captured by the help of digital celluloid. Techniques putting a photo’s touch with reality at risk, like tone ,apping or excessive retouching, I am refusing categorically as they are nothing but a tool for artificial sensationalism. Suchlike work is nothing but a computer created picture that barely bears traces of the photography trade.

Is there a difference between McDonalds and watching photos? Well, photos surely got fewer calories and you don't get fat when looking at them, but nowadays, in times of the internet and digital photography, most of the people are only consuming images like an everyday lunch meal. As soon as they are continuing browsing/reading/whatever they are all-too often simply throwing away what they've seen without thinking about what they were allowed to witness without leaving their comfy chair.

Photographically I do what I want and what I feel like. That includes the portrayal of a person the same way like taking a finely adjusted capture of a swimming pool inside an abandoned Soviet military base. However my biggest passion are volcanoes, their massive power, their creational potential plus the everlasting fight between hot and cold, fire and ice, the death bringing forces of the earth and the ever reviving nature. That philosophy takes me around the world, that philosophy stands behind my photos, that is my driving force.
