Tech-Free Students

I believe that technology in elementary school isn't needed. As everyone knows, technology is bad for children’s eyes and brain. So, why can’t we avoid it? I don’t have a tablet at my home but, in school, children use iPads and computers for learning and research. Some schools ask students to do their homework online and type reports on computers, causing students to leave their handwriting behind.

According to an article by Chris Weller in Business Insider, on February 18, 2018 most of the famous tech inventors in Silicon Valley are raising their children tech-free. Now, this might sound crazy, but the Gates family only has a computer in the kitchen! A famous Microsoft inventor is saving his children from what he created. Steve Jobs, the CEO of Apple who is a huge fan of his technology, banned his kids from using it. He revealed in a 2011 New York Times interview that he prohibited his kids from using the newly-released iPad, his own creation.

Students can have healthy minds by reading books. Books improve their creativity, thinking, and bring calmness to their minds. Books aren’t bad to their eyesight either. Technology makes people lazy and can also bring memory loss. My mom said “When I was a kid, I could remember all my friends’ contact numbers”. But once she got her mobile phone, she got used to calling her friends from the contact list and set reminders for recurring things such as my classes. I see my friends bringing cellphones to school and playing games in bus. As you can see, technology is affecting many of us and makes us dependent on it. Not only can technology be hard on students’ mind, but it can also damage their eyesight. To fix those problem students can eat vegetables like carrots, bell peppers and leafy greens.

An early stage of a child’s life needs to be full of activities, playing with other children to develop their social skills. Therefore, elementary schools should avoid technology based learning. They should also impose a ban for cellphones as they are over used for their age. Parents and teachers should work as a team to educate students about the un-healthy side of using technology and make elementary schools Tech-Free.
