Lift the Corners of Your Lips
Anshi Kanodia, Division 1, 6th grade #ws16e-s3d1

Stimulating, Motivating, Inspiring, Loving, Encouraging! That is what a smile is. What will I do to make the world a better place? I’ll simply lift the corners of my lips. This can help people gain confidence in themselves and comfort them in a catastrophe. Smiling is an easy task, but it possesses effects that can alter the world.

People of all ages can cast a smile when they walk by someone. I can also say “Hi,” “Good morning or evening,” or just smile alone. This uplifting task should be everyone’s simple, yet extraordinary, job to do as a human being. Think of the world as one large community where everyone has to help and motivate each other. A fact people should know about smiling is that it uses fewer muscles than frowning, which makes it an even simpler yet effective gesture to do.

By grinning, I am helping myself too. Research says that smiling is a natural stress reliever and helps lift my own spirit. When greeting someone with a smile, I feel better about myself. As I smile, I seem more approachable, trustworthy, and friendly. And if I am in a bad mood, I can think about the motto, “Turn your frown, upside down,” which often will bring me happiness.

Imagine gloomily strolling around in a bad mood, and not feeling confident when you walk by someone with the warmest smile. If that happened to me, I would feel jubilant as someone cared enough to notice me. My foul attitude would become better. Let’s say that this smile inspired you. Suddenly, you would put your negative thoughts aside, be able to think more lucidly, and move on with your life instead of being stuck in a black hole. Maybe you could even change the world! All inspiring leaders spread joy, so that they can influence others to do the same.

Have you ever heard that smiling is contagious? If I spread happiness, jokes, or just a mere smile, others will catch on and do the same too. If everyone passed on this happiness starting with even the slightest grin, a chain effect would follow. Soon, each individual in a small community would be smiling, just because one person took the conscious effort to instill a happy mood. A smile is a healthy virus that can spread like a wildfire to a massive crowd.

To make the world a better place, I am just going to smile. This will make the environment more positive and a cheerier place to live in. Now, whenever I walk by someone, I will give that person a broad grin. The world can change with a simple lifting of the corners of my lips!
