Roz, a Different Type of Character

Most characters in stories nowadays, fictional or non-fictional, are either people or animals. Even though technology, especially artificial intelligence, is getting more advanced than ever before, there still are not many well-known robot characters. This is one element that sets Roz, a heartwarming robot from the story, The Wild Robot written by Peter Brown, apart from other characters. At the beginning of the story, Roz is viewed as a suspicious monster by the animals on a remote island with inauspicious atmosphere. With her kind heart, she is able to adapt to her surroundings and becomes friends with the local inhabitants. Roz teaches the readers valuable lessons of being kind, agile, and patient. She also imparts the idea that one can still perform good deeds regardless of differences in physical appearance. Kindness and the ability to recognize diversity are character traits that I want to have so I could develop compassion to help make the world a better place.

With technological advancements in today’s world, it becomes controversial as to how the natural ecosystems can merge with technology. Google Books Ngram Viewer, a statistical analysis of text tool, states that the usage of the word “robot” is below the name of many animals. This data indicates that the idea of a robot character has not been very popular for books. Roz, an inspiring robot who lives in the real world and raises a gosling, catches the interest of readers from the very beginning. It is fascinating to witness how technology collides with nature, reacts to the world around the wild creatures, and integrates harmoniously with Mother Earth.

Roz teaches the readers essential life lessons. Despite the fact that animals on the isolated island are terrified of her, Roz adapts herself to the environment, learns about the island, emulates its animals, and offers help to them. As time goes by, she ends up gaining genuine friendship and trust from the local inhabitants. Roz learns kindness from others, cares for friends wholeheartedly, and successfully spreads the message that even though people are different in their physical attributes, they can still treat each other with respect, kindness, and decency. Roz keeps an open mind and never stops spreading tolerance and trustworthiness. Her positive traits remind me of one of the seven habits I learned from school, synergy, which means collaboratively working towards a joint goal. Although the world-renowned physicist Stephen Hawking had warned that the development of artificial intelligence could potentially destroy human civilization, from the story of Roz, the readers can optimistically predict that human beings and robots can work with each other for the betterment of humanity.

Roz is a robot character that spreads positive core life values and is distinctive among her own kinds. She breathes life into reading and helps readers learn the quality of being kind, considerate, friendly, and generous. Looking different never stops her from performing good deeds for others. Living a life like Roz will be fulfilling and meaningful.
