My Nokia 620 upgraded to windows phone 8.1 on the weekend and it is absolutely awesome. It is so freaky how good the swipe keyboard is I can actually see myself writing word documents on my phone. Can't wait for Cortana to be released in Australia. Bing in the last few months has improved out of sight. For all the nay-sayers out their enjoy what you are using but don't knock a windows phone based on some crappy article written by someone who has no idea how to use one.

Indonesian tobacco exports must be falling. This thing really annoys me. They don't care that their people die young from tobacco related diseases because they don't provide the healthcare costs to their citizens who are dying from tobacco related illnesses. Trade barriers are not the issue here, public health is.
Indonesia wins the right to seek a ruling by the World Trade Organisation on Australia's plain-packaging laws.

Those skinny scroll bars suck in the Chrome browser. When I want to use Chrome OS I will install the OS but in the mean time I want the ones that go with the OS installed on my computer thanks!!

Was out on the Newcastle foreshore this afternoon. Small storm front making it's way through. This photo is looking eastward towards Nobby's (the rocky out crop in the middle of the photo). Currently this harbour sees more coal exported through it than any other in the world.

Had to make an unplanned visit to Sydney on the weekend. The photo was taken this morning from the 42nd floor of the Hilton Hotel looking south down George Street. The haze in the photo is from local hazard reduction burning in nearby bushland in preparation for summer

We attended a function at the Ivy on Saturday night. My wife loves seafood so we subjected ourselves to the chaos of the Sydney Fish Market before heading home. Of course  on the way there we missed the turn off (again) and took a scenic drive over the Anzac bridge. They were burning off bushland on the Central Coast as well. No wonder the city was hazy.

In protest of Google messing with the consistency of my desktop experience (dodgy Chrome OS style scroll bars) I am using Internet Explorer 11 when I use google products. (Google web services should be the safest on the planet right?)

Google also seems to be collecting more background data with their mobile apps. A colleague showed me how much data Google+ uses on his new Nexus 5, and he barely uses the app. Perhaps Google uses it as a conduit on the device?

Over the last 100 years there's been 20 fatal shark attacks in Western Australia.  There's been 877 attacks in Australian waters since 1791, with 216 fatalities. So even if a person IS attacked by a shark, they don't always die.
During the years from 1980 to 2013 there have been 47 people killed by snakes..
During the average month in 2011, there was 107 people killed on Australian roads ..

I'm putting these numbers up because the West Australian Gumbyment have decided that sharks are so dangerous that anything over 3 metres long seen swimming (because, you know, sharks don't walk up on land and attack us) in any one of 5 Perth areas will be killed.
Most often people attacked and killed by sharks are surfers and divers, all of whom know the risks associated in playing in a sharks kitchen.
As horrible as it sounds to be eaten by an animal, we are at a far greater risk of death by car.. which generally means death by stupid.
Very few car accidents are totally unavoidable yet a 100 or more every month are killed on our roads and we seem immune to it.. 20 shark attacks in a state over 100 years and it's panic stations.
Want to avoid being eaten by a shark?
Pretty simple really, carry on as you do, the chances of even seeing a shark, let alone being attacked by one is incredibly small, put it this way, more West Aussies have won the lottery than have been attacked by a shark.
The chances of being killed driving to the beach is far higher than a shark attack..
If it still scares the shit out of you, swim in a pool.
Culling a creature (that Humans already kill 100 million a year of for a bowl of soup) is not the answer..
WA Government, you got it wrong...   again
Don't kill the shark, or the snake, or even the car... educate.

Another snap of the Newcastle foreshore. Believe it or not the land around here was originally a railway goods yard.
