"It is about 3-4 times harder than most steels," said Emilia Morosan, the lead scientist on a new study in Science Advances that describes the properties of a 3-to-1 mixture of titanium and gold with a specific atomic structure that imparts hardness. "It's four times harder than pure titanium, which is what's currently being used in most dental implants and replacement joints."

A wide range of climate data was analysed for this study, including atmospheric circulation fields, sea-ice records, ocean surface temperatures and meteorological observations from six Antarctic Peninsula research stations with near-continuous records extending back to the 1950s.

Oscar Konyukhov, who heads the support team based at Northam, said his father was on track to return to Earth somewhere in Australia on Sunday—12 days after he started. The previous record of 13 days and eight hours was set by American adventurer Steve Fossett in 2002.

Far from being the only country to ramp up the rhetoric since COP21, Canada is in many ways representative of the transformative effect last year’s Paris meeting has had on the world economy. A little over six months on from when the landmark agreement was struck, it’s clear that more countries than ever before are taking a proactive approach to climate change. Innovative technology is one thing, but a willingness to pursue broad-based and sustainable gains has made all the difference between the worlds of pre and post-COP21.

Each of the first six months of 2016 set a record as the warmest respective month globally in the modern temperature record, which dates to 1880, according to scientists at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. The six-month period from January to June was also the planet's warmest half-year on record, with an average temperature 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.4 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than the late nineteenth century.
