TOM HOWARD/MARGARET REID POETRY CONTEST
16th year. We will award the Tom Howard Prize of $1,500 for a poem in any style or genre, and the Margaret Reid Prize of $1,500 for a poem that rhymes or has a traditional style. Ten Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each (any style). The top 12 entries will be published online. The top two winners will also receive one-year gift certificates from our new co-sponsor, Duotrope (a $50 value). Length limit: 250 lines per poem. Entry fee: $12 per poem. Final judge: Soma Mei Sheng Frazier, assisted by Jim DuBois. Submit online by September 30.

We've expanded to five categories this year: Mainstream/Literary Fiction, Genre Fiction, Creative Nonfiction & Memoir, Poetry (new), and Children's Picture Book (new). Karen Harryman and A.T. Hincapie won the top awards in the 15th annual Tom Howard/Margaret Reid Poetry Contest, sponsored by Winning Writers. $4,300 was awarded in all. 3,223 poems competed from around the world.

We invite you to compete for our third annual NORTH STREET BOOK PRIZE for self-published books. This year's deadline is June 30. Submit a self-published book in one of the following categories, up to 150,000 words in length:

General Fiction (literary & genre fiction)
Young Adult Fiction
Creative Nonfiction & Memoir

The winner of each category will receive $1,500, a marketing analysis and one-hour phone consultation with Carolyn Howard-Johnson, a $300 credit at BookBaby, and 3 free ads in the Winning Writers newsletter (a $450 value). Two honorable mentions in each category will receive $250. We will publish online excerpts (1,000-6,000 words) from all entries that win a prize, along with critiques from judges Jendi Reiter and Ellen LaFleche. Lauren Singer and Annie Keithline will assist in the judging. The entry fee is $60 per book.

All contestants will receive a copy of How to Get Great Book Reviews Frugally & Ethically by Carolyn Howard-Johnson (PDF) and free guides to successful publishing from BookBaby.
