Woodland Weeds, 1905. John Henry Dearle for Morris & Co.

6 Dec: Woodland Weeds is based on a Morris and Co. wallpaper design. This design has the medieval millefleur look that William Morris was so fond of but with a late Victorian repeating scroll form.

It is interesting, though, because, although it has the tidy millefleurs look that Dearle does very well, it has several characteristics that are ...

Voynich Manuscript Tiles - Featured 10 November 2016

The Voynich manuscript was discovered in Italy in 1912 but has been dated to 1404-1420. It is written in an unknown language that scholars now believe may be Nahuatl. Nahuatl originated in Central Mexico during the 7th century. It was the language spoken predominantly by the Aztecs.

Following the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century, the alphabet was replaced with Latin. Nahuatl became a literary language, used in poetry and passages, similar to the Voynich manuscript.

The Voynich manuscript contains herbal images and descriptions, star charts, and strange groups of women. I've started with the herbals.
