A quick write-up (and a few reference links) about the Big Data announcement from Google Cloud Platform during last week's Google IO.
Last week was a great party for the entire Google developer family, including Google Cloud Platform. And within the Cloud Platform, Big Data processing services. Which is where my focus has been in the almost two years I've been at Google. It started with a bang, when our fearless leader Urs ...

First disappointment after a week at Google: the role of funny Frenchman is already taken.

I would think today that count would be up by +1. Check the news.

Hope you have a great time. You can be the funnier Frenchman?

Twitter puts no limit on how you post to Twitter, but harsh (and ever-changing) limits on what you can do once something is a tweet. This means that a tweet should be considered a leaf node in your publishing process. Akin to a backup or log entry. It's not where the information lives, it's where it goes to freeze.

Bullet #2 in this "beets" blog post is basically that. And it's a good thing. I suspect we'll see more of it.
Since before beets had a real blog of its own, I've been using the @b33ts Twitter account as a simple, zero-effort way to make announcements about the project and keep users up to date. Most of the ne...

When browsing the Web from my Android phone, some sites urge me to download their app instead. It's a bit like someone going to a nightclub to tell people "you should dance with my sister instead, she's smarter, better-looking and a better dancer, here's her phone number".

Wow! Should we ever cross on campus, I guess I'd only recognize the bearded caveman.

Should be an interesting week. My second Google I/O as an employee, first one as a presenter. Wednesday, 3:00pm: Big Data, the Cloud Way.
Making sense of your Big Data problems doesn't have to require a herculean effort. Deriving meaning from your data, at any scale, doesn't have to involve a tangle of clusters, configurations, and scripts that takes a team of specialized administrators to unravel. In fact, you can make it manageable and easy for all developers without losing insight in the process. We've created easy-to-use services so that you can run dee...

"Share what's new" you say? Well, I'm joining Google on Monday. Cloud Platform team. That's what's new.

If for you inviting your parents to Google+ is a one-click operation, you're lucky. For me it means creating a GMail account for them (with a ridiculously simple password), inviting that account to Google+ from my account, accepting the invite, setting up the Google+ account (language, privacy settings, email preferences…) then sending them a URL and corresponding login/password. And probably several sessions of remote tech support.

I'm doing it because of the "background update" of photos and videos from my phone via the Android app for Google+. Effortless way to send them videos of their grandkids. Very nice app.

I predict that the first Google+ outage will happen when Jack Dorsey creates a circle called "square".

I haven't had time to do much with Google+, but from what I can see it would be an improvement over Twitter. I'm seriously considering moving my Twitter updates here, so feel free to start following (what's the Google+ term for that?) this account if you follow me on Twitter (where I'm @vambenepe).

Dear ex-Oracle colleague, could you at least make sure that posts are duplicated or x-posted on twitter :) ?
