With great trepidation I ask this...My first marathon is this coming Sat (4/19 Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon) and I'm debating whether or not to wear my Garmin (FR620); and if I wear the watch the next question is to wear the heart rate monitor or not.

I feel that wearing the watch and being aware of my pace would help me slow down at the start and not "go out too fast". My inclination is to wear the watch sans HRM. I can always turn it off or just ignore it (ok maybe not, I'll admit to being metrics junkie).

The downside is getting caught up watching the watch and missing out being in the moment.

If your real concern is to not be a clock watcher, turn the watch so the face is on the underside of your wrist.  Having to turn your wrist differently will be a cue to pay attention to the moment.

Test your running IQ. I got 3/9 but learned a lot.
Maybe you're a hardened ultramarathoner. Maybe you just like to lace up your shoes a couple of times a week and go for a jog. But how much do you really know about running? Test your knowledge of the history and science of the two-legged life with our quiz.

I got 5; not bad considering two were a complete guess!

It was a good run - until it wasn't. PRs for 10k, 13.1 & distance. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/474865862

Learned I should't chase short distance PRs during a (really) long run. Need to eat more real food and less gels when running for this long of a duration.

Wore the On Running Cloudsurfers which I really like but after about 12 or so miles they are just to firm. Was planning on using New Balance 1400v2s for my marathon (2 weeks out) but they are too soft. So now I fell like Goldilocks. My just wear my trusty @Saucony Kinvara 3s.

Where was the first trail race held? My score was 3/9.

Today was a good day. If you consider running over 20 miles for nearly 3.5 hours good. And I do.

Just keep in mind: #Louisville  is NOT Kentucky!

Q. The Derby is coming up, so as we sit around handicapping the field it occurs to us to ask: Can Kentucky truly be classified as Southern?
