David J. Abrams
David J. Abrams, 57 of New Street, Amsterdam died unexpectedly Saturday morning July 25, 2015 at home.
He was born in Amsterdam on April 28, 1958 a son of the late John and Patricia Weaver Abrams and was a 1977 graduate of Galway High School. Dave attended FMCC and was a lifelong area resident.
He owned and operated Dave’s Tavern in Galway for twenty five years. During this time, Dave sponsored several sports teams and was a quiet driving force behind numerous charitable causes. He enjoyed the camaraderie and companionship of the local patrons, and always made them feel like part of his family. Dave cared deeply about his family and his community, and was always ready to lend a hand.
At the time of his death, Mr. Abrams was employed as a Teacher’s Assistant at the Broadalbin-Perth School District. He enjoyed working with students and always tried to encourage and support them. Dave established the travel basketball for the district and also coached several soccer, basketball, and baseball teams with the Youth Commission.
Dave was a dedicated Boston Red Sox fan and enjoyed sports and music. His greatest delight was spending time with family and friends, living quietly with no fanfare, yet providing strength and protection for those he loved.
Survivors include his loving wife, the former Helen M. Hoffman, whom he married on May 5, 1984; two sons, David R. Abrams, Sr. of Broadalbin and Michael J. Abrams of Amsterdam; two brothers, Thomas Abrams of Yonkers and William Abrams of Murfreesboro, TN; two sisters, Carrie Jones of Gloversville and Theresa Porcello of Hagaman; and two grandchildren, Kaydence Miles and David R. Abrams, Jr..
Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 -7 at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc. 111 County Highway 106 (Corner of Route 29 & Black Street) Johnstown. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 10 am at the funeral home with Linda Eastman, trustee of the Hemlock Independent Gospel Church. Final burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Galway. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sports Booster Club at Broadalbin-Perth, in care of the funeral home.
