"I never meant to cause you any sorrow" ~Prince

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Purple for Prince 4

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2qH0ezr

BACKGROUND: This photo is one of the purple photos I made the day Prince died. It features the Lowry Bridge and it's lit up arch that was colored purple on that evening (and for the weekend too) in memorial of Prince. The city skyline in the background also features some purple, including the IDS Center and the Target Corporate Headquarters. The Capella Tower also turned purple for the weekend but their system is somehow difficult to work with so they couldn't get their halo lights changed for the first day.

"Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold." ~Prince

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Purple for Prince

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2H921sa

BACKGROUND: I adore Prince. He has been by far my favorite artist since I first heard 1999 back when I was 14 in 1982. I have been fortunate to live in an area that gave me access to all his parties and shows he has put on through the years. Between his shows at Glam Slam, and at his Paisley Park Studios, I've seen him perform over 300 times or so. I made many lifelong friends during that time, and I had the unbelievable opportunities to party with my lifelong idol. I still have to pinch myself sometimes.

So on that 21st day of April 2016, like many others, I was devastated. Nearly two years later, like many others, part of me still is. That evening, on April 21st, the city of Minneapolis put on all-night Prince parties. Actually, they did that the entire weekend. The entire city also turned purple in memoriam of Prince on that evening and through the weekend. I made sure to get out with my camera to take photos of the purple skyline on the night of the 21st. I didn't go to any of the parties. I just don't think I could have handled it. But I did get this photograph (and others as well) showing the purple lights on the City of Minneapolis as we all celebrated Prince's life.

"Love is too weak to define, just what you mean to me." ~Prince

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Under the Purple Bridge

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2H9ueiA

PHOTO BACKGROUND: This is another photo that I shot the night Prince passed away. If you haven't noticed yet, I have been a huge Prince fan for all my life. From the moment I first heard 1999 back in 1982, it was a remarkable love affair with his music. And I was lucky in that I got to spend hundreds of days with him. So, this day was an emotional one and as I was going around the city, seeing it all lit up in purple, it was often difficult to control those emotions. I know for this photo, I have to be thankful for auto-focus on our lenses as my eyes were too watery to focus properly. This spot has become a favorite destination for me. I often find other photographers down here as I did on this evening. For them, they were there for the purple lights. For me, it was therapy that I very much needed. I am looking forward to seeing the purple lights again this weekend, and am hoping to capture something magical.

"I Was Dreaming When I Wrote This..." ~Prince

PHOTO OF THE DAY: The Sky Was All Purple

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2JQ4eX2

BACKGROUND: I shot this photo the day Prince died. It was a horrible, gut-wrenching day for a guy like me who had over 1,000 albums of his, saw him perform a few hundred times, and heck, I even had a dance-off with him on a slow evening at Paisley Park. It kind of blows your mind when you mimic one of his dances, and then he mimics one of yours and you're all "holy crap, he knows MY dances?!?!". Anyway, April 21st of 2016 was a dark day. When I saw and heard that Minneapolis was lighting up in purple for him that evening, I grabbed my camera and headed out to get some photos. It was a therapeutic thing to do and I didn't really care if the photos turned out or not. Thankfully some of them did. Now, as far as this photo goes, yes the sky was actually purple. It was mostly the purple lights of the city bouncing off the low clouds, but my goodness did it ever hit hard seeing a purple sky on the night he passed. Obviously, I juiced this photo up quite a bit in Photoshop. I just cranked the purple level up as high as it would go. And I absolutely will not apologize for it. "I don't wanna die, I'd rather dance my life away"

I may spend most of this week posting other photos of Minneapolis turning purple.

"The cold never bothered me anyway" ~Elsa⠀

Since winter is not going away here in Minneapolis, I figure it's time to bust out a photo of a winter version of Cinderella's Castle.⠀

DISNEY PHOTO OF THE DAY: A Frozen Holiday Wish 4⠀

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2JKBqPP

BACKGROUND: During the Christmas season at Disney's Magic Kingdom, they light up Cinderella's Castle in ice. I'm sure most of you have seen many photos of the castle lit up this way. As beautiful as those photos are, there is absolutely nothing that compares to seeing it in person. Over the last couple of years they have added a Frozen themed show for when they turn the Christmas Ice lights on, and it of course features Elsa, Anna, Olaf and other Disney and Frozen characters. The designers at Disney have done a truly remarkable job of integrating projections onto Cinderella's Castle, and that is what you see in this photograph here. I was standing at the end of the bridge that leads to Liberty Square, and is right next to the Sleepy Hollow restaurant. The giant snowflakes you see on Cinderella's Castle are the final projections that you see right before the Christmas Ice Lights turn on and fireworks shoot off into the night sky. I love that the full moon was making an appearance in this scene. I know on my next trip, I am going to have to get to this spot again. This shot turned out perfectly, but when I tried to photograph the fireworks that followed, I missed them completely. So until next time...

DISNEY PHOTO OF THE DAY: Blue Illuminations Intro

LINK TO PHOTO: https://buff.ly/2ITAmrp

BACKGROUND: In 2016 I made a very rare summer trip to Walt Disney World. As much as I love being down there, the summer heat and crowds are two things I am happy to avoid. However, in this case, I jumped at the chance to go as I was celebrating a pretty major medical event and was out of the hospital and cleared for all activities. On my first evening there I was at Epcot and as I was looking at my plans for photographing and watching Illuminations, a light bulb went off in my head.

It was June, Illuminations would be starting just a few minutes after sunset and there would still be light in the western sky when the show started. For my first time ever, I was going to be able to photograph Illuminations and do so with a colorful background! So I made my plan to be on the exact opposite side of World Showcase Lagoon as the sunset that evening, which brought me to be between the Italy and Germany Pavilions.

This photograph is the opening 35-seconds of the show and captures the initial arching flare and burst that opens the show. I love the look of the blue sky in the background, the flowers and the foreground, and the iconic Spaceship Earth of to the side.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Full Moon Skyline

LINK TO IMAGE: https://buff.ly/2qkTJSB

PHOTO BACKGROUND: You may have just seen this photo over the weekend as I now have this also set as one of my Minneapolis Wall Murals. That post was one of my biggest posts in a while, so I also wanted to share the original photo for those who want to see it. This photo was the result of some research, some trusting my gut, and a whole bunch of amazement. The research came from a new piece of software I had found that let me see where the moon rise and set would be each day. From there I tried to find some places where I might be able to line up the moon-rise with the Minneapolis Skyline. I then took a chance and went to a place I had never been to before. Well, I had been to Theodore Wirth Park, but I had never been to the dirt-bike hills. And that is where my research and guesswork told me to go. So I grabbed my telephoto lens, my tripod, and my camera and made my way to the hill. Once there I climbed my way up, while both trying to stick to the trail and stay out of the way of the mountain-bikes that were riding by. After a little bit of wandering around, I found it. A sight of the Minneapolis Skyline I had never seen before. Shortly after that I was completely blown away. From this vantage point, the moon was HUGE. This photo is not photoshopped. What you see is exactly what I saw that evening. It was absolutely breathtaking.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Minnesota Twins 2

LINK TO PHOTO: https://buff.ly/2EyH9Eu

PHOTO BACKGROUND: I have taken many photos of this colorful, arching bridge, but this may be my favorite of all of them. This photo features the Lowry Bridge spanning the Mississippi River with downtown Minneapolis in the background. The bridge is normally lit up in blue. And it may be a blue that is just a touch lighter than the blue in this photo. On this night, it was lit up in the colors for the Minnesota Twins in celebration of their Home Opener that was happening the following day. Normally, the city lights up in the colors for each team on the day of their home opener, but in this case, the city gave the Twins two days. I had a bit of an ordeal getting to this location to get this shot, but as you can see, it was more than worth it. I had left my house basically wearing summer shoes. I had the intention of taking a sunset photo and returning home. But then I saw the city was lit up in some new colors and I couldn't pass that up. To get to this spot, you have to climb over a thigh high chain, and then go down a somewhat steep hill to get to the riverbank. It is fairly easy trek in the summer. But we are in the never ending winter here. So the hill was covered in 8" of freshly fallen snow, which had kind of melted, and froze, and was on top of some gooshy mud as most of the snow had already melted before the previous days snow hit. So, yeah, my shoes didn't stand a chance on that hill. At least it raised my heartbeat for the day.

PHOTO OF THE DAY: Minnesota Twins 1

PHOTO LINK: https://buff.ly/2GKsUhL

PHOTO BACKGROUND: I had gone out on April 4th with the hopes of capturing a beautiful and colorful sunset behind the Minneapolis Skyline, and while on my way to my destination I changed my mind and went to the Stone Arch Bridge. Once there, I noticed all of the light wispy clouds had burned off so my colorful sunset wasn't going to happen. But I then noticed that the IDS Center was lit up in Red & Blue instead of it's typical white. I then noticed the 35W bridge was also lit up in Red & Blue instead of it's normal blue. So, I changed up my plans and made my way over to this pedestrian bridge that I love taking photos from. From here you can see the Minnesota Vikings stadium (though it is partially hidden now by two new condo buildings), the entire Minneapolis Skyline, and the Mississippi River with all of it's bridges that span it. My camera was able to capture more light in the sky than my eyes could see, and I like that extra bit of vibrant sky in the image.

I found out later that the red and blue colors were for the Minnesota Twins home opener. I had kind of figured that, as the city always lights up in the home teams colors on the night of their home opener, but in this case, they gave the Minnesota Twins two nights of color as their Home Opener was the following day.
