#FlashbackFriday! This holiday season was one for the books. There was daily entertainment and celebration! Some are constant volunteers we see often that add so much joy and love to our residents and staff. Melody Makers entertained us all with song and theatrics, including juggling. Ugly Sweater Day was celebrated by the brave and silly. Burlington Edison High School Key Club helped bring Christmas to life when decorating alongside our residents and the Burlington Edison High School Band brought the sounds of Christmas through-out Where the Heart is with their wonderful and powerful music!

Christmas vacation for the students of West View Elementary and Lucille Umbarger Elementary started off with a magical story written and read by local author Ramon Mesa Ledesma at Where the Heart is! Ramon’s book, Tomas and the Magic Race Cars, was enjoyed by both residents, students and volunteers. After the reading students asked questions about what it’s like growing up as the son of a migrant worker and how he became a well-known author. The students brought handmade Christmas Cards and candy cane reindeer for the residents, and enjoyed homemade Christmas Cookies from the residents!

Burlington Edison High School Key Club has been busy with many activities at Where the Heart is. Last week, they were enjoying making and decorating Christmas cookies with residents Wanda, Joyce, Marge, Dorothea among many others. It is always great having youth actively working alongside each other engaged in conversation with anticipation of enjoying their final product!

Local author, Richard Wagner, read his book Longfellow and the Deep Hidden Woods to the residents at Where the Heart is along with Ms. Lauren Hyman‘s West View 3rd Grade class! This story is about grief and loss from his dog’s point of view. By the end of the story, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. After the book reading the students and residents enjoyed cookies and candy canes together.

Burlington Edison High School Key Club took residents Gail, Mary, Treva, Joyce and Mary shopping for fleece. Why, you might ask? Because we like to make things at Where the Heart is and so do these BEHS Key Club members! The Key Club raised money to purchase the fleece to do an activity of making blankets for holiday gifts for families living in Skagit Valley.

Holidays are a time of celebration and one way the residents at Where the Heart is enjoy celebrating is through dance. This holiday season residents enjoyed Christmas music accompanied by Cathy VanLuven and her Holiday Line Dancers. Amazing dances were performed with synchronized steps in lines of two and sometimes three deep while the residents tapped and clapped along!
