It's been over 15 years since the Agile revolution began. One of it's founding tenets was automated acceptance testing. Why was it considered so important back then? Is it still important today? What things are people doing right and wrong? What do the tools look like?

Bob Martin answers these questions in more in this SkillsCast recording of his recent talk on automated acceptance testing. You can find the SkillsCast (film/code/slides) here: https://skillsmatter.com/skillscasts/4143-automated-acceptance-testing

Announcing Spring eXchange 2015 –  the conference on modern Spring and Java Technologies in London on November 6-7th
Would you like to find out the future of the widest used Java framework available? Fancy learning and sharing with 250+ like minded developers to tackle common problems?

JOIN US AT THE SPRING EXCHANGE, THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON SPRING IN LONDON
Thanks to the great input and ideas contributed by our community and the support of Dave Syer and others, we have been able to put together a program that rocks!

We're planning on three tracks over two days, covering Enterprise Java technologies, Big Data and Spring XD, Spring in Production, Spring IO, Spring Data, REST and Microservices: a whole range of Enterprise Java topics. There is a beginners track as well, for those just getting started. At the end of each day, we're providing a unique forum to explore ideas about these topics with hundreds of other members of the Spring and Java community during our ParkBench Panel discussions: this is an experience you won't get back at the office.

So if you'd like to spend the day learning all the newest tools and best practices in Java and Spring, to have meaningful conversations to help you write more powerful software, and to discover how to best deliver what your business needs, do come along!

BRILLIANT MINDS ON STAGE!
Featuring +Dave Syer +Josh Long +Ben Hale +Russell Miles  Mark Pollack and other top experts in the Spring and Java community, this year will be the sixth anniversary of this cornerstone conference for the Spring and Java community - and it’ll be our best yet.

Expect to meet members of the GoPivotal Spring Framework team and to learn about the most comprehensive programming and configuration model for modern Java-based enterprise applications. Share your ideas with leading innovators in the Java movement: you can trust us to invite the best!

FANTASTIC VENUE
After the success of last year, it was clear we needed a bigger venue for this year's Spring conference. So we have secured the BDC in Islington, where we will be able to accommodate London's sizeable and ever growing #springX community. With great spaces for talks and discussions, unrivalled technology capabilities and fantastic transport links in one of London's most buzzing areas, we could not think of a better venue to host this year's Spring eXchange.

Even bad code can function. But if code isn't clean, it can bring a development organisation to its knees. Every year, countless hours and significant resources are lost because of poorly written code. But it doesn't have to be that way!

In this two-day Clean Code Workshop you will learn the principles and practices of Clean Code as described in Robert C. Martin's book: Clean Code: A Handbook of Agile Software Craftsmanship. You will also receive this book as part of the course materials.

You can find full details of this course here:

https://skillsmatter.com/courses/435-uncle-bob-martins-clean-code-agile-software-craftsmanship

This Clean Code workshop alternates between lecture and exercise so that you can experience, first-hand, the practices and disciplines of the following fundamental topics:
 - Professionalism, Craftsmanship, and Clean Code.
 - Choosing Meaningful Names
 - Writing Clean Functions
 - The Proper Use of Comments
 - Coding Style and Formatting
 - Object Oriented Programming vs. Procedural Programming.
 - Error Handling Boundaries between Subsystems
 - Unit testing, and Test Driven Development
 - Writing Clean Classes Systems
 - Plan vs. Emergence
 - Concurrency
 - Smells and Heuristics.

Twitter Flock - a conference of Twitter Fabric, their modular mobile platform, in London on Feb 19th

In October at their first annual Twitter Flight developer conference, Twitter announced Fabric, a modular mobile platform that helps you build the best apps. To kick off the new year they are hitting the road on a worldwide tour they call Twitter Flock.

Their UK event (in London) will be held of February 19th. Quite a few of us at Skills Matter are going, and I thought some of you may like to come along as well.

Join #TwitterFlock in London, to learn and share skills with the advocates and engineers who built Fabric, as well as local developers who have built great apps on the Fabric platform.

You can find more information about Twitter Flock London here:

I help people learn and share skills to write better software
Introduction

I started Skills Matter 10 years ago, a highly social tech startup, with a mission to support and drive innovation in enterprise software development. We do this by bringing smart and creative people together in an environment that encourages conversation and collaboration, resulting in ideas.

We believe solving complex problems is fun and, that when we bring lots of smart people together, magic happens.

We understand what it takes to encourage cross-pollination, collaboration, instil passion, encourage the learning and sharing of skills, technologies and best practices between the members of our community and the world's technology creators and innovators.

Each year, in collaboration with the world's leading software developers technologists and agilists, we run nearly 2,000 expert talks, tech meetups, hackathons, expert workshops and conferences where we bring together many thousands of passionate developers to share and learn. We record each talk and publish these as SkillsCasts (film, code, slides) on skillsmatter.com.

We've been doing this for nearly 10 years (our birthday is in November!) and are at the heart of the Silicon Roundabout in London – it has been said there is a buzz about our place that says ' something is happening here...' so we are also building the same vibrant community in New York.

We have amazing plans and because of the recent investment we gained we can implement them at a much faster rate. For that to happen we need more great people to share their ideas, skills and thoughts with us - and join our community! We hope to see you soon!
