Don't want to spend on marketing tools? Check out this brilliant list of free tools, compiled by +Buffer's +Courtney Seiter

Would you add any other tools to that list?

29 Free Marketing Tools
“Aren't shortcuts just the best?” Yes, yes they really are. +Courtney Seiter of the well renowned +Buffer team went hunting for the top free marketing tools. Here’s what she found…

Full list of tools - http://blog.bufferapp.com/29-free-marketing-tools

In her blog post, Courtney breaks down the tools in a variety of marketing categories. I have scoured them over the past hour or so and chosen my favourite tool from each category. Which one is yours?

Research Tools
I can’t stress the importance of research and tracking. For that reason, I’ve chosen the Open Site Explorer - www.opensiteexplorer.org - by +Moz to help me see a list of sites that are linking to me. It’s also a very useful tool to keep an eye on your competition.

Ideation Tools
Every blogger has been through a phase where they’ve been stumped for ideas. +HubSpot's Blog Topic Generator - www.hubspot.com/blog-topic-generator - comes up with suggestions based on a few simple words. If you’re stuck for words then you’re really in trouble!

Reading and Writing Tools
Keyword stuffing. We’ve all been there and done that. This on-page optimization tool - www.internetmarketingninjas.com/seo-tools/free-optimization/ - from +Internet Marketing Ninjas provides stats on keyword density, links and more. Quite a handy tool when you consider the implications it could have on your SEO efforts.

Twitter Tools
It would be ironic if I weren’t to mention Buffer. However, for the sake of the list, I chose Followerwonk - www.followerwonk.com - as it lets you find, analyze and track followers on the noise polluted platform.

Facebook Tools
Over the past year or so, EdgeRank has become increasingly important. Nobody apart from Facebook’s engineers know how it truly works but Agora Pulse’s Barometer - www.barometer.agorapulse.com - helps you track how your Facebook Page’s reach and engagement stacks up against other similar-sized Pages.

LinkedIn Tools
Does anyone actually use LinkedIn for anything other than stalking background checking people? I don’t so I’ve decided to swerve using any tools for the platform.

Website Analysis Tools
Courtney most likely omitted Google Analytics to let other tools to shine, so to speak. I swear by Google but was surprisingly impressed by +HubSpot's Marketing Grader - www.marketing.grader.com - which gives you a simple report on your marketing efforts.

Relationship Tools
Anyone using Chrome, Gmail or LinkedIn for that matter knows about +Rahul Vohra's Rapportive - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rapportive/hihakjfhbmlmjdnnhegiciffjplmdhin - an extension that helps you know everything (well, almost) about your contact right in your inbox. What a simple, yet brilliant idea.

That’s about it. Last but not least, a big thank you to Courtney for taking the time and effort to compile this great list of tools. Do support her work by +1, sharing or commenting as a small gesture of appreciation.

Did Courtney miss any tools that you use on a daily basis?

Facebook changes News Feed to make updates from Pages better

Facebook prefers links over plain text
Facebook introduced one big change to its News Feed today: It will promote updates that include links posted by Pages over posts without links.

What's the change about?
According to Facebook, "the goal of every update to News Feed is to show people the most interesting stories at the top of their feed and display them in the best way possible."

My big issue is how do you create an algorithm to decide what each person finds interesting? The only reason I use Facebook is to stay in touch with my family and friends around the world.

Personally, I don't need links cluttering up my News Feed.

What are you thoughts?
Will we see better content being produced or will Facebook just turn into a LinkedIn Community where people add each other for the sake of it and spam the hell out of the place?

Thankfully, we were asleep when this supposed "hack" happened. Just in case..

What to do if your social media account is hacked

As you might have heard via +Socialize Me (or various other sources), +Buffer was hacked. I'm sure +Leo Widrich & his team have since identified the problem and upped their security.

Just in case you were hacked or hijacked, here's a good little article by +Owen Williams on how to go about resolving the issue.

p.s. there's a very valid comment by +Shane Gowland - run a malware scan before updating your passwords.

Happy Chinese New Year
On behalf of our team in Hong Kong, we wish you & your family good times, great food and all the best for 2014.

We'll swerve the obvious horse puns and instead share this beautiful illustration by Taiwanese artist, Cheng Yi-Fang.

Do check out Cheng's work if you liked the painting:

Why +Evan Spiegel turned down Facebook

Many would have bitten off Zuckerberg's hand but it's so refreshing to see a CEO like Evan doing something for the long term.

Would you have turned down $3 billion?
