New post! When we think of Polish art of the interwar period the name that most often comes up is Tamara de Lempicka - but there was another woman artist who in her time was considered 'Her Royal Highness, Princess of Polish Painting' - Zofia Stryjeńska. Read all about her life and why she has been left out of art history. #arthistory   #womanartists   #wearenotamuse   #art   #polishart

The first in a new mini-series on We Are Not A Muse - introducing the women of the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops), founded in 1903 as the commercial arts and crafts arm of the Vienna Secession. Women were at the heart of its success, but have been largely written out of its history. We're going to put that to rights! #artandgender   #wienerwerkstätte   #viennasecession   #womenartists   #modernism   #design   #wearenotamuse   #arthistory   #womenandart

Known by some as the 'Indian Frida Kahlo', today's blog post is all about the life of Hungarian born, Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil
#art #arthistory #historyofart   #modernism   #womenartists   #artandgender   #wearenotamuse
Living a life as unique as her artworks, Sher-Gil's works blend elements of modern European painting of the time, and inspiration from the primitive and 'exotic'. Sher-Gil managed to achieve a huge amount in her tragically short life, including becoming the youngest and the first Asian associate of the Grand Salon in Paris.

Women artists in their 80s and 90s. That are largely, or until recently have been, unknown. I know a few. One is almost 100. Talk about working on and on without professional recognition. It is a very impressive group.

Read all about the incredibly diverse life of Yayoi Kusama. An artist and writer, Kusama has dabbled with a wide variety of art practice over the course of her career such as painting, collage and performance art to name a few.
This blog post follows Kusama's extensive artistic career, from her early success in her native Japan, through to her associations with the New York avant-garde and then the latter years of her life, during which she voluntarily admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital. Kusama still resides in the hospital today, continuing to create her art, while also launching her literary career, publishing poetry, novels and an autobiography.

On This Day in History December 13, 1961: Renowned American folk artist Anna Mary Robertson Moses aka Grandma Moses (September 7, 1860 - December 13, 1961) passed away at the age of 101. Moses’ story is amazing in that she didn’t start painting in earnest until she reached the age of 70!!! It just goes to show you that you are never too old and that it is never too late to find yourself.
