"Scientists were able to force an epigenetic reaction that turns on and off a gene known to determine the fate of the neural stem cells."

What exactly they got the cell to do, they don't say. But they were able to modify the methylation profile of a gene called Ascl1 so that when they shined blue light on it, it would change the gene expression, and I guess they are thrilled that they can now control exactly when and where a gene in neural stem cells is expressed and think it will enable a lot of future research.
