Will sauces ruin your diet?

I had a great question from Brad on the 2Hours2Wow body transformation program about using sauces and condiments. The short answer is use sparingly to not all if you are in a weight loss mode. For weight maintenance and general health (a different mindset) you can relax a little. But when it comes to any sauce, dressing, spread, condiment etc we're generally talking about the flavour coming from either:

Salt
Sugar
oil/fat
and/or vinegar

Salt, sugar and fat won’t help the health and/or weight loss cause so always use sparingly and perhaps only once or twice a day (rather than on top of each and every meal).

The caveat to that is: do you get some other nutritional benefit to offset the salt/sugar/fat content? E.g. Salsa sometimes has sugar & salt added but is full of veges. Also, vinaigrette has lots of oil (usually of the better, unsaturated variety) but plenty of vinegar, which is good for gut health, and usually herbs (micronutrients). Mustard often has some sugar added but mustard seeds are full of micronutrients.

When deciding on a condiment, try to think along the lines of:
i) How much is all this adding up? (e.g. imagine the difference over a year of removing one teaspoon of sugar in two daily coffees – a small change repeated many times = a big change).
ii) What additional benefit will you get from consuming this product? Think along the lines of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, gut health etc.

Gut health is the big new health discovery that is just dawning. If some of the early work is correct, a great deal of modern lifestyle diseases could emanate from inflamed guts (intestines) from too much sugar, too little fibre and other dietary sins which change out helpful gut bacteria for harmful colonies. Get out the 'intestinal broom' with a little roughage people!

When mobility, injury, heart problems or a low baseline level of fitness present challenges in even initiating healthy lifestyle changes, simple foundational strength is needed to pre-condition the body. Poor physical fitness has been identified as the dominant lifestyle risk factor for preventable disease and early death - even more dangerous than smoking! (!!!) Improved wellness starts with improved fitness. Try this test - can you walk up 2 flights of stairs quickly, without losing your breath?
