The Coyote Buttes area is mostly known for "The Wave" but the surround area has amazing features, as well. Because of the awesome colors in the Navajo Sandstone, most images are in color but I like how B&W highlights the textures and shapes.

White Pocket is an amazing area of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in Arizona. For the past 8 months I have been mostly focusing on the more colorful rock sections while waiting for monsoon season to work the white rock areas which I'd always assumed I would shoot in B&W.

Well, monsoon season is now here and the afternoon buildups are creating some very nice backdrops to the textured white rock.

I shot this one a few days ago and will be doing more images over the next month.

The Coyote Buttes area of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument is a wonderful mixture of forms and textures. I usually shoot with a canon 5ds r but have also been experimenting more with my #iPhone which is what I used to make this image.

Many people focus on the Navajo sandstone's vibrant colors but I also love the way B&W exposes the gnarly shapes, patterns, and textures formed by extreme geological forces over millions of years.

Spent some time exploring some areas of South Coyote Buttes I hadn't been to before and it was extraordinary! Then when the monsoonal clouds came in just before sunset it got even better.

I have posted a couple of pictures from my "Petrified Sand Dunes of White Pocket" series. This image is one from a new series I'm just starting, "White Pocket Shadows" which I intend to be all B&W.

Most people have heard of The Wave and though it is an amazing area I personally think White Pocket is better. WP is hard to describe and must be experienced to appreciate the geologic forces that have bent a twisted the cross-bedded sand dunes into Navajo sandstone with intricate patterns of lines and colors, twisted and bent in unimaginable ways.

Introduction

I have always been drawn to nature and the strong emotions it evokes. There is something magical about hiking through a slot canyon, sleeping under the stars or watching the first rays of the sun illuminate a mountain peak.

On one level, a photograph is nothing more than spots of ink on paper or colored pixels on a monitor screen. In my images, I try to transcend the physical, immersing the viewer in the emotion as if transported to the location and experiencing it first hand.
