What do you do for photo storage management?
I also back up additive (don't delete files deleted on the master) except for a purge once a month or so.
For backups in Windows:
If you're just backing up to a USB drive, Windows Backup may be enough, but it doesn't support network drives unless you have Windows Pro.
If you're backing up to a NAS or other network device, I recommend Synctoy, one of Microsoft's "power toys" that are free if you know where to find them. It uses rsync-like methodology and can be scheduled to run at a certain time, or run manually http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155
