The team was able to store quantum information in silicon using only simple electrical pulses, instead of pulses of oscillating magnetic fields. This is the same way that the computers we use today encode data, and it means that we now have the ability to cheaply and easily control the quantum computers of the future.

Researchers from UNSW in Australia are a big step closer to creating affordable, large quantum computers, after gaining electrical control of quantum bits, or qubits, for the first time. The team was able to store quantum information in silicon...

Emmy Noether was one of the most brilliant and important mathematicians of the 20th century. She altered the course of modern physics. Einstein called her a genius. Yet today, almost nobody knows who she is.

In 1915, she discovered one of the most profound ideas in science. Yet universities wouldn't hire her because she was a woman.

“I think we’re going to have strong indications of life beyond Earth within a decade, and I think we’re going to have definitive evidence within 20 to 30 years,” NASA chief scientist Ellen Stofan said Tuesday (April 7) during a panel discussion that focused on the space agency’s efforts to search for habitable worlds and alien life.

Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!

In fact, suspensions for cannabis use were found to make children “more likely to reuse marijuana.”

A new study by the American Public Health Association has found that suspending students for smoking pot does not deter marijuana use. In fact, suspensions for cannabis use were found to make children "more likely to reuse marijuana," and students attending schools with suspension policies for illegal drugs were 1.6 times more likely to use pot than those at schools without a disciplinary approach.

Science, Music, Writing & Lotsa Fun!
Introduction
Please feel free to introduce yourself after circling me. I would love to circle you back.

I have diverse interests. I like pretentious poetry, physics, computer science, MUSIC, Tupac and great big slobbering bwains. I am a drama-free attention whore. A hockey card, comic book, Russian lit lover, honest and goofy as hell. I can take care of myself, and you too, if you play your cards right sister.

I’m not afraid to say whats on my mind. Not only on the internet like some punk laptop gangster, but in the real world where it counts. Peace.

Some free online resources

For those who like to spend their online time learning about the most diverse things.

  • Open Culture - a quick one stop shop for a wealth of online resources for language learning, interesting podcasts, free ebooks and classic films, etc.
  • Learn how to code for FREE -  Geeks rule! Codecademy is the easiest way to learn how to code. Signing up for the free service will hook you up with a new programming course each week. It's interactive, fun, and you can do it with your friends.
  • Khan Academy - mostly science lessons and exercises, but also has a growing collection of history, art history and American Civics, for those a bit more humanities orientated.
  • M.I.T. OpenCourseWare - Totally free college education regardless of your academic performance or background. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) has announced that they intend to launch an online learning initiative called M.I.T.x, which will offer the online teaching of M.I.T. courses free of charge to anyone in the world.
  • Smithsonian Podcasts - One stop shop for Smithsonian podcasts (also available on iTunes, but a chore to search through.)
  • Archaeology, Museums and Outreach - a recently published blog post detailing the best free downloads.
  • Museum ID - Publishes a journal and has recently completed a nine-book series of which one chapter of each is available to download for free. Free!
  • Cosmos: A Personal Voyage - One of the most inspirational science documentary series ever. The full episodes of Sagan's classic series "Cosmos." All 13 hours!
  • Enjoy! And don’t forget to let me know if you find any great, free learning-related resources online that I can add to the growing list.
