Guys, i wrote this super-basic guide to introduce Git to some students. I didn't cover branching or even merge.  I just tried to walk through the very-basic stuff and give an idea about the workflow.

I would be glad to receive some critics about this article.
So, here we go again! Our purpose here is to present and make a brief walk through this great VCS, Git. Initially we introduce the concept of a Version Control System and justify it's use. Then, we...

What's happening in Siberia's thawing permafrost and Greenland's melting glaciers sounds borderline supernatural. Ancient viruses, bacteria, plants, and even animals have been cryogenically frozen there for millennia—and now, they are waking up.

Fair python criticism from a frustrated Unix user and teacher.

What's wrong with Python's distribution infrastructure.
Nasty Python Monstrosities. Wednesday, February 4, 2015. Scenario: I've written a simple Python command-line tool. It consists of more than one file, because separation of code is important. It only needs to run on UNIX systems and shouldn't require sudo to install. How do I distribute this code ...

I've started to look at using Conda for our project.  We manage over 120 packages of C, C++, Fortran, and Python.  So far it seems to be handling the C/C++ code and I suspect the Python code will be easier--not sure it's any easier than pip though.  Having said that, this seems to be a problem that runs across most of the FOSS I use (think autotools, rpm, deb, etc...).  There's so many variations and systems, and none of them seem to be a perfect package management system.  One of the things Conda has going for it is multi-platform.  Conda was however developed to help solve the Python installation issues, especially when there is supporting compiled code.  Hopefully someday we have a standard system to handle code installation, but just try to herd them cats ;)

Interesting work. To paraphrase: US scientific funding rates are so low, that most good proposals are unfunded. Among the best proposals, getting funded is largely a matter of chance. Significant labor is wasted writing proposals that go unfunded despite merit.

"We note that 20% funding rates impose a substantial opportunity cost on researchers by wasting a large fraction of the available research time for at least half of our scientists..."
