Is your lower back pain making it hard to fall asleep, and startles you awake at any hour of the night?

One of the most common causes of lower back pain is a pulled back muscle, which occurs when a muscle in your lower back is strained or torn as a result of being over-stretched.

Symptoms from a pulled back muscle typically resolve within a few days, but the intense pain can make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Worse yet, the longer you lie in the bed, the more deconditioned your body gets and the worse your symptoms may become.

No single sleeping position works for every person with a pulled back muscle, but a good place to start is to test sleeping on your side. When sleeping on your side, try the following:

* Avoid a tight curled-up fetal position (knees pulled in toward the body), and instead sleep with your body slightly elongated.

* Slip a slim pillow between your knees to support the natural curvature of your spine.

* Find a head pillow that holds your head midway between each shoulder. If your pillow is too thin or too thick it can bend your neck at an uncomfortable angle.

You may also benefit from massaging Arnica oil into your back before getting into bed. Arnica oil deliver muscle-relaxing, natural pain killer and inflammatory properties into your muscles, that will help you both fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Evening primrose oil (EPO) is extracted from the seeds of the evening primrose flower, which is high in omega-6s. EPO is famous for supporting female hormone balance and works by supporting levels of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which has major anti-inflammatory properties and does wonders for hormone regulation.

In a recent study women found taking evening primrose oil supplements helped with PMS and cystic acne, in particular. It's also a great oil to put directly on the face, especially helpful for extra-dry or inflamed skin from conditions like acne and eczema.

Lemon – This scent promotes concentration and has calming and clarifying properties that are helpful when you’re feeling angry, anxious or run down. Lemon also has antiviral and antibacterial properties and can help fight sore throats and colds by boosting the body’s immune system and improving circulation.

Increase your alertness first thing in the morning with an energising essential oil shower melt. (Mix 1 cup of cornstarch, ½ cup of baking soda, 7 drops rosemary, 5 drops peppermint and 3 drops lemon essential oil in a large bowl with a whisk. Now start adding water, little by little to form a thick paste, this part is easy to mess up so make sure you keep adding the water in small quantities. The baking soda will make it fizz a little but don’t worry about it, focus on creating a thick paste. Once that’s created, scoop it up into a ice cube tray and keep it in the freezer for 2-3 hours. After which, pop them out and store in a mason jar. To use, place one on the shower floor and the steam and hot water will break it down, leaving you with the energizing scents of the oils in the air!)

What are the effects of bedtime gratitude?
Poor sleep is a powerful downward spiral for our personal and professional growth, including how our day is going to turn out.
