This CTO has discovered an incredible way of making developers read his commit messages. You won’t even believe how he did it!

If you use a bluetooth headset w/mic then you can use voice dictation with your watch. Immensely useful.

Performance through the roof

Before: 3+1 x RAID-5 7200 rpm HDDs
Read: 144 MB/s
Write: 4.9 MB/s (probably due to faulty HDD)
Access time: 15 ms

After: 4 x RAID-0 OCZ Vector 128 GB SSDs
Read: 1100 MB/s
Write: 955 MB/s
Access time: 0.04 ms

With the new 13.10, I thought I'd get a hard drive upgrade as well. But the main reason I upgraded was that one of the HDDs was giving signs that it's dying - performance was also noticeably affected. Checking the SMART data I found that that particular HDD had been turned on for 4+ years. Whoosh! This has been the third hard disk to ever die on me - but the first one out of warranty. After I took it out, I could hear the disk move inside when I'd do a twisting motion with the drive... ouch! That dinosaur was still working??

Anyway, with RAID-0, reliability is probably not as good as before, when I had RAID-5. But I have hourly incremental backups with backintime.

After I've benchmarked this new setup, I went to look at what data rates you get from RAM memory. It seems that between SSDs and RAM there's roughly 50x difference in data rate and 10x difference in access time, while between HDDs and RAM there's roughly 100x difference in data rate and 1000x (!!!) difference in access time. Now that's something to think about when your DB hits the disk.

THIS

Complete game-changer. Practically allows regular Android widgets to be displayed on the watch.

Takes a bit of configuring, but it's soooo worth it!

I have Google Now, Spotify, Spotify remote (for my desktop), FlightTrack (next flight information), Widgetsoid † (airplane mode, silent / vibrate mode etc), Facebook, Google+, Twitter and a button to put my desktop to sleep (via Tasker SSH Command Launcher).

I also keep this app open on the watch so it's immediately there when I double-press the watch button.

If you have ideas for other interesting widgets to use, leave a comment below.

† Needs "Dim screen" config.
NOTE:You need Sony SmartWatch2 device to use this software.Assign your favo...

Users of the extra secure and private email provider Lavabit are out of luck after the owner shut down the service on Thursday offering only a cryptic message as an explanation. Lavabit is the preferred email service provider of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, and yes, this matters.
