I have a whole mess of talks upcoming:@C2SV, @cogcomputing, LBL, DC, Vegas, and more -- http://www.vivienneming.com  So much to share!
"Maximize human potential — that of others as well as your own... "It's a philosophy that Vivienne Ming refined as a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon University. Now the theoretical neuroscientist — involved in research, entrepreneurial technology and philanthropy — has been named one of Inc.

Re/Code's awesome Arik Hesseldahl interviewed me & Gild 's CEO about "Building a More Diverse Workforce Through Software" http://goo.gl/Uh2rpg
Companies say they want more diversity, but have trouble changing their hiring habits.

Flying home from NYC, the entire plane just exploded as US scored on Portugal. The loudest sound ever heard on a flight that didn't end in tragedy. (Almost scared me to death.)

Hey! Great to see a new post from you! Glad it was only USA fans and not engines that exploded. :-D

An excellent and quite balanced analysis of the "Town of Greece" Supreme Court decision. There are real concerns on both sides, but "because it's always been that way" should never decide any issue.

Interesting article, and a topic I've pondered for some time. I lean towards "common denominator," as it creates something in the way of respect for others, but I hope we will always struggle with this issue. It's in the struggle that the greater truths are found.

"There's a difference between being openly embraced and taken seriously" Silicon Valley Embrace #LGBT Community http://nyti.ms/1zS3IxJ

There's even a nice little photo of me in the article :)
Young gays and lesbians are trying to recode the culture in Silicon Valley, but it’s still a work in progress.

"If spam filters sorted messages the way Silicon Valley sorts people, you’d only get email from your college roommate. And you’d never suspect you were missing a thing."

This is one of the best posts on "company culture" I've read in a long time. I'm working on a model of culture right now and these issues are deep in my mind.

http://qz.com/225782/the-next-thing-silicon-valley-needs-to-disrupt-big-time-its-own-culture/
There's a problem with Silicon Valley and the subcultures that imitate it. It's a design bug woven into people's identities and sense of self-worth. Influential and otherwise very smart people will deny till their last breath that it even exists. But I believe it does and should be fixed before it gets any worse. Since...

Interesting article. I have to say that in the nuclear power industry, the culture is still 1965-1975. If the evil fracking doesn't kill it, it will die from never having been able to change it's culture at all.

Women? Very few.
LGB of LGBT. Fewer still.
T of LGBT. None that I'm aware of.

I look forward to reading your model of culture. It's an important and interesting topic to me.

I'm particularly fond of the author's point about how the personal involvement of the "titans" (e.g. Zuckerberg) drives up the acquisition price. I wonder what the premium is for a purchase made over his dinner table.

Wow... thank you, Brett! I'm comfortable admitting that I would flattered to be on this list, but your flattery is worth almost as much :)

I shivered my way through DC, NYC, Salt Lake and Chicago, all the while dreaming of a warm #SXSW. Austin, you've let me down.

This winter has been relentless. I live in Michigan, and am beginning to doubt if Spring will ever return!
Does any of your statistical work deal with the climate?

"I’d always looked enviously at the people who earned more than I did; now, for the first time, I was embarrassed for them, and for me. I made in a single year more than my mom made her whole life. I knew that wasn’t fair; that wasn’t right. Yes, I was sharp, good with numbers. I had marketable talents. But in the end I didn’t really do anything. I was a derivatives trader, and it occurred to me the world would hardly change at all if credit derivatives ceased to exist. Not so nurse practitioners. What had seemed normal now seemed deeply distorted." - Sam Polk
