Does the honeyguide bird get a tip from the honeyhunters? Here's a detailed and fascinating story about the relationships between man and nature and how we sometimes romanticise stories through anthropomorphism #naturefaking The reason that at least one tribe doesn't reward the honeyguide makes uncomfortable sense.

It's such a good year for snowdrops, I'm thinking of a bit of migratory beekeeping ;-) Snowdrops are usually the first pollen source for bees in the British Isles. This year they are a little late in the south, but making up for that in their profusion. Honey bees seek them out if it is warm enough. There is little competition because they flower too early for other bees.

I've been quite amused by the articles on robot pollinators. Even though the creators freely admit their system is far from field-ready, I couldn't help doing some speculative calculations. At today's prices their robots cost $100 each -- excluding fuel. Now, if that robot can do the work of one of my bees, does that mean that the value of one of my colonies is 50,000 bees times $100 = $5 million, fuel included? ;-)
