Highlights must do’s and your guide to exploring #Newcastle from here:

“Perched between a working harbour and beautiful beaches, Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, with a rich maritime history, vibrant arts culture, cool bars, acclaimed restaurants and accommodation options aplenty. Merewether Beach is also one of Australia's National Surfing Reserves and home to the international Surfest surfing competition held in February each year.

The emerging food scene in Newcastle is evident in the great restaurants, bars and outdoor cafés around the city. Sip cocktails at one of the many harbourside restaurants or bars at Honeysuckle or head to Beaumont Street in Hamilton to dine at outdoor mediterranean-style cafes. Darby Street, in Cooks Hill, is a bohemian strip with eclectic boutiques, bookshops and cafés just perfect for a late breakfast.

Port Stephens is a 40-minute drive from Newcastle. As well as beautiful waterways, Port Stephens is a great place to see dolphins in the wild and take a whale-watching cruise. Meanwhile, if you fancy a trip to a Hunter Valley vineyards, it's only an hours' drive from Newcastle.”

Have you been to ‘Whiteley on Water’ yet at the Newcastle #Art Gallery?

Newcastle Art Gallery is proud to present Whiteley on water, an exhibition in association with the Brett Whiteley Studio and the Art Gallery of #NSW which has been drawn from their respective collections.

The idea of ‘on water’ binds together Whiteley’s iconic interpretations of Australian life by the sea with his revered status as one of Australia’s greatest artists of the 20th Century. A celebration of our nation’s ‘cult of the coastal life style’ from Byron to Bondi, the exhibition includes the unfinished beach polyptych which had never left the studio until its recent display at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre as part of the original iteration of this exhibition in 2012. It represents Whiteley’s ambition and commitment to the Australian landscape.

Sun, bodies and beauty are all represented with an underlying element of danger – much like the idea of the Australian coast. Whiteley consistently highlighted this tension found in nature throughout his practice with fibreglass sharks diving upwards and eggs balancing precariously atop vertical growing plinths. His beloved Lavender Bay is also depicted with such intense and prolonged observation, the subject of some of his most successful works.

Bar Beach is an inner city suburb of #Newcastle, New South Wales, #Australia, located 1.6 km southwest of Newcastle's central business district. The suburb is named for the beach that extends along its eastern border. The quintessential family beach. It features a patrolled swimming area as well as a sheltered rock pool for children and those who prefer to swim in calmer waters. Bar Beach is a favoured stretch for joggers and walkers and a great place to watch Hang Gliders who take off from nearby Strzlecki Lookout.

Is it Australia’s most underrated city? Anyone surprised to see Newcastle on the list of 2011′s hottest cities (and there’s a few of you, right?) probably hasn’t pulled in off the Pacific Highway, or at least not for a while. Newcastle flies under the radar of Aussies and international travellers in part because it’s overshadowed by its bigger, bolder and better-known sibling, Sydney, 150km south. But, at around one-tenth the size, Australia’s second-oldest city has Sydney-like assets: surf beaches, a sun-drenched subtropical climate, and diverse dining, nightlife and arts. Not only is Newcastle ideally located just two hours by road or rail or 30 minutes by plane or seaplane from Sydney, it’s less than an hour’s drive west to the Hunter Valley wineries, south to sailboat-filled Lake Macquarie, north to whale-watching and sharkfeeding at Port Stephens and to sandboarding at Stockton Beach (the southern end of the 32km-long beach is a five-minute ferry ride across Newcastle’s harbour).
