WHEN marketing researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School rigged shopping carts at a major East Coast supermarket with motion-tracking radio-frequency tags, they unwittingly stumbled on a metaphor for our path through the aisles of life.

Route data from more than 1,000 shoppers, matched to their purchases at checkout, revealed a clear pattern: Drop a bunch of kale into your cart and you’re more likely to head next to the ice cream or beer section. The more “virtuous” products you have in your basket, the stronger your temptation to succumb to vice.

In 1923 J. Paul Goode combined the Mollweide (Homolographic) and the Sinusoidal to create the Homolosine to produce the homolosine equal-area projection, a pseudo cylindrical equal area map designed to present the entire world in one view.
The major advantage of this projection is that the continents are viewed in their proper size with respect to one another. On the other hand, direction and distance are not accurate.

Bet you thought Africa was almost the same size as North America. But in reality, it can fit China, India, the United States, Japan and the majority of European countries into its landmass.

One common definition of a species is a population that will not interbreed with outsiders. Since coywolves continue to mate with dogs and wolves, the argument goes, they are therefore not a species. But, given the way coywolves came into existence, that definition would mean wolves and coyotes should not be considered different species either—and that does not even begin to address whether domestic dogs are a species, or just an aberrant form of wolf.

In reality, “species” is a concept invented by human beings. And, as this argument shows, that concept is not clear-cut. What the example of the coywolf does demonstrate, though, is that evolution is not the simple process of one species branching into many that the textbooks might have you believe. Indeed, recent genetic research has discovered that even Homo sapiens is partly a product of hybridisation. Modern Europeans carry Neanderthal genes, and modern East Asians the genes of a newly recognised type of early man called the Denisovans. Exactly how this happened is unclear. But maybe, as with the wolves of southern Ontario, it was the only way that some of the early settlers of those areas could get a date.

Inspired by the recent remarkable advances of deep neural networks in computer vision, we have recently launched an improved YouTube "thumbnailer" algorithm that uses neural networks to automatically select the best image to showcase a video’s content. Head over to the Google Research blog to learn how it works.
