Congratulations to Dani, Mark, Ben, Scott and Dan for winning the inaugural Diamond Relays last night at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

The London Marathon team was delighted with their collective winning time of 1 hour 22 minutes.

The new event saw 230 teams taking part in a 5x5km road relay, which featured iconic landmarks such as the Orbit Tower and the Aquatics Centre before finishing in the Olympic Stadium.

The London Marathon - the biggest annual fundraising event on the planet
Introduction
The London Marathon was first held in March 29th 1981. Since this time the event has continued to grow in size, stature and popularity with more than 35,000 runners each year. In all, a total of 746,635 have completed the race since its inception with 36,550 runners crossing the line in 2010.

The course starts in the beautiful Greenwich Park and takes you past London’s famous sights including the Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Tower of London, Nelson’s Column, and the Millennium Wheel before finishing in front of Buckingham Palace.

As a fundraising event, there is no marathon in the world that comes close to the Virgin London Marathon. One of the dominant images of the race is that of thousands clad in fancy dress, tramping the cobbles in support of charitable causes dressed as rhinos, football team mascots, giant trees and the like. The runners have raised over £557.8 million for good causes since the first race in 1981.

The 2015 event will take place on Sunday 26 April.
