Periscope on Android is LIVE
Periscope is very busy right now with many more users jumping in to experience what the buzz has been about for the past two months.

Periscope is finally now on Android!

..and it even has some new features that aren't on the iOS version.

I've broadcasted a few scopes today and watched a few and there are currently some glitches occurring, with numbers of users present in a broadcast jumping from many to 1 and back again.  Some broadcasts are so 'fuzzy' they're unwatchable, with others dropping out entirely.

I'm sure the Periscope team will have it all sorted soon.  :-)

You can download Periscope free from the GooglePlay Store: vintui.tv/1FWyY4h

The internet is running out of room – but we can save it
The crunch is real, caused by fast growth of online media consumption through the likes of Netflix and Youtube, but physics and engineering can help us escape it. The internet just needs a few tweaks.

Fear of a capacity crunch stems from a hard physical truth – there is a limit to the amount of information you can cram down any communications channel, fibre-optic cable or copper wire.

Thanks for that in-depth answer +Vin Brown  I think you're right about most everything you said - translating into American's situation, of course.  Infrastructure is something we ignore for far too long and we'll panic when something happens rather than consider the consequences of putting blinders on - roads, power grid and bridges to name a few.  I'm confident we'll do the same with the internet.  Will be following your thoughts on this subject +Vintuitive. :)

Australia a leader in hacking mobile phones, Snowden document reveals
Australia's electronic espionage agency has exploited weaknesses in a mobile browser used by hundreds of millions worldwide and planned to hack into smartphones through data links to the Google and Samsung app stores, a leaked top secret intelligence document has revealed.
[...]
The leaked document shows the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) hosted a top secret workshop in November 2011 with GCHQ and CSE representatives in Canberra and virtual participation from NSA and GCSB via a secure chat room. This was followed by a second workshop hosted by the CSE in Ottawa in February 2012, which included direct representation by all Five Eyes signals intelligence agencies and aimed to "build on the work started" at ASD.

Australian government announces crackdown on tax avoidance by Apple, others
The so-called "crackdown" was announced by the government in a press conference held in Sydney on Monday, as reported by Reuters. Australia's treasurer, Joe Hockey, told the press that major companies are "diverting profits earned in Australia away" from the country to avoid paying local taxes.
[...]
One analysis issued last week said that if the E.U. were to impose the worst-possible scenario, it could reduce Apple's annual earnings by 10 percent.

Sometimes you need to get the volume just a bit lower than the first notch. Is that even possible? It certainly is! All you need is a little Keyboard Kung Fu know-how:

Apple and Google Just Attended a Confidential Spy Summit in a Remote English Mansion
At an 18th-century mansion in England’s countryside last week, current and former spy chiefs from seven countries faced off with representatives from tech giants Apple and Google to discuss government surveillance in the aftermath of Edward Snowden’s leaks.

The three-day conference, which took place behind closed doors and under strict rules about confidentiality, was aimed at debating the line between privacy and security.
[...]
Google engineers were outraged by some of the disclosures and openly sent a “fuck you” to the surveillance agencies while hardening Google’s security. Meanwhile, Apple has expanded the range of data that’s encrypted by default on iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers, and CEO Tim Cook has vowed never to give the government access to Apple servers, stating “we all have a right to privacy.”

Our own David Irvine, former chief of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) was also there.

Outrage as PayPal 'double dips' into customer accounts
One distressed customer said she had run out of medication which she needed as a matter of survival, and received "no assistance" when she contacted the company.

Another customer published a snapshot of his bank account showing he had been (temporarily) robbed more than $1000 as a result of the duplicate transaction.

Tech Industry gives budget a measured tick
Last night's budget announcements gave some promise to the Australian ICT sector but there were some mixed responses with concerns of the lack of a complete plan to develop the digital industry.

*************************
Australian Computer Society:
“More needs to be done, particularly in education, in order for Australia to remain competitive and prosperous in today’s fast-paced digital economy"

*************************
Cloud service specialist Bulletproof:
“While there could arguably be some negativity around the cuts to the entrepreneurs infrastructure program, the effect of the other measures in stimulating private sector activity will significantly offset this reduction.”

*************************
StartupAUS:
“Despite an encouraging move by the government to back small business, this year’s budget does not address the needs of a vital part of Australia’s economy: its tech start-up ecosystem,

StartupAUS is pleased to see moves by the Government to support crowdsourced equity funding and to fix the tax treatment of employee share schemes. We also applaud financial measures that make it easier for Australians to start new companies.

However, we believe an overall strategy is needed to accelerate the growth of Australia’s tech sector and to bring Australia in line with the rest of the world when it comes to supporting start-ups.”

Edward Snowden says Australia’s new data retention laws are 'dangerous'
Whistleblower says mass surveillance did not stop the Sydney siege, the Boston marathon bombings or the Charlie Hebdo magazine attack in Paris
[...]
“Australia’s role in mass surveillance around the world is similar to the UK and the Tempora program,” Snowden said via satellite from Moscow.

“They’ll collect everyone’s communications, it’s called pre-criminal investigation, which means they are watching everyone all the time. They can search through that information not just in Australia but also share with overseas governments such as the US and UK. And it happens without oversight.”

How to add to Collections
By now you have probably heard about the new feature to Google Plus, Collections. These can be a great way of collecting your content of a particular theme and presenting it together in a single place.

After having created a Collection, you'll want to add posts to it, here's how to do that:
- Search for the topic
- Locate a post you want to add
- Click on the little downward-pointing arrow to the right of the reshare button
- Select the Collection you want to add the post to

That's it!

Have a look at my Keyboard Kung Fu Collection for shortcut tips for the Mac:
