Aussie public spams minister, pokes fun at push for new data retention bill
Lawmakers in Australia are set to vote on a new data-retention law, that would force telecommunication companies to keep people's data for two years.

The idea has sparked anger among activists, who say it would give the authorities even greater powers of surveillance.

Your subconscious is smarter than you might think
...Hassin’s key experiment involved presenting arithmetic questions unconsciously. The questions would be things like "9 - 3 - 4 = " and they would be followed by the presentation, fully visible, of a target number that the participants were asked to read aloud as quickly as possible. The target number could either be the right answer to the arithmetic question (so, in this case, "2") or a wrong answer (for instance, "1"). The amazing result is that participants were significantly quicker to read the target number if it was the right answer rather than a wrong one. This shows that the equation had been processed and solved by their minds – even though they had no conscious awareness of it – meaning they were primed to read the right answer quicker than the wrong one.

The result suggests that the unconscious mind has more sophisticated capacities than many have thought. Unlike other tests of non-conscious processing, this wasn’t an automatic response to a stimulus – it required a precise answer following the rules of arithmetic, which you might have assumed would only come with deliberation. The report calls the technique used "a game changer in the study of the unconscious", arguing that "unconscious processes can perform every fundamental, basic-level function that conscious processes can perform".

We feel that we are in control when our brains figure out puzzles or read words, says Tom Stafford, but a new experiment shows just how much work is going on underneath the surface of our conscious minds.

Apple Pay: a new frontier for scammers
Criminals in the US are using the new Apple Pay mobile payment system to buy high-value goods – often from Apple Stores – with stolen identities and credit card details.

Banks have been caught by surprise by the level of fraud, and the Guardian understands that some are scrambling to ensure that better verification and checking systems are put in place to prevent the problem running out of control, with around two million Americans already using the system.

The crooks have not broken the secure encryption around Apple Pay’s fingerprint-activated wireless payment mechanism. Instead, they are setting up new iPhones with stolen personal information, and then calling banks to “provision” the victim’s card on the phone to use it to buy goods.

Introducing....Vintuitive Web Development & Promotion!
I've cracked an early knock off beer on this 35 degree day in Adelaide (because we can do that as Freelancers :-)) and thought it about time I introduced myself.  I'm +Vin Brown and I run +Vintuitive, a web site design and social media promotions business based in Adelaide.

Though I'm located in the beautiful Adelaide I work with businesses and organisations all over the globe. Right now for example, I'm heavily involved in promoting a peace project that is building a pyramid that will function as a time capsule.  It's called the +Earth Pyramid and one of it's main aims is to educate children all around the world about the earth and to get them thinking of the future of the planet. We're also using the opportunity to try out theories of traditional ancient Egyptian pyramid construction techniques.

+Melinda Samson and I met on GooglePlus through a course we were both doing and worked together as part of a small team.  And that is how I found my way here, on invitation from Mel.

Here's a bunch of links where you can find me:
Website: http://www.vintuitive.com

Hi all, lovely to meet some local businesses on the Plus. Now that I've introduced myself I'll move out of lurker mode and start posting here. :-)   Have a great weekend everyone!

Ludlam demolishes data retention bill
At the end of January, the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security (PJCIS) held two days of hearings into the government's data retention legislation.
[...]
Committee Chair, Greens Senator Scott Ludlam did a particularly excellent job of highlighting some of the very significant weaknesses in the legislation, in terms of its coverage and likely effectiveness, and in the justifications presented for it.

Google executive and co-founder of the internet Vint Cerf says you need to start printing everything out
DIGITAL technology could turn the 21st century into a new dark age lost to history, a leading internet pioneer has warned.

As operating systems and software get upgraded, documents and images stored using older technology are becoming increasingly inaccessible, said Dr Vinton “Vint” Cerf, vice-president of Google. In centuries to come, historians looking back on the present era could be confronted by a digital desert comparable with the dark ages — the post-Roman period in Western Europe about which relatively little is known because of the scarcity of written records.

Samsung is warning customers about discussing personal information in front of their smart television set.
When the feature is active, such TV sets "listen" to what is said and may share what they hear with Samsung or third parties, it said.
[...]
"If your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party."
[...]
Privacy campaigners said the technology smacked of the telescreens, in George Orwell's 1984, which spied on citizens.

Hehehe.  I reckon it would be fairly difficult to avoid saying anything of a personal nature in your own lounge room.
