GooglePlus Starts Tweeting After Sitting Dormant for Four Years
Nearly every key Google product has its very own Twitter account. Google Drive, Android, the Nexus program, even Google Glass all have their own Twitter accounts to keep fans up to date on product news, tips and tricks, and occasional random foolishness. Even Google+ — the social network, community, and photo-sharing space that's never quite caught on in the way the company hoped for — has its own Twitter account. An account that has lay dormant for the nearly four years that have gone by since Google+ launched. Until today.

Suddenly, the Google+ Twitter account has come alive, asking the "Twitterverse" to give some love for its #firstTweet. There are also a bunch of individual replies to Twitter users, each containing a GIF. It's not a bad strategy — no one's going to get mad at a corporate Twitter account for throwing some GIFs your way.

Why start tweeting now?

Facebook posts disappearing: Company says security bug to blame for missing content
Facebook says security issues are to blame for some users being prevented from updating their statuses and posting photos and videos over the last 24 hours.
[...]
Facebook says it is currently "trying to identify the bug" which it says is a problem from its end, not a user-network issue.

"There is a security bug with Facebook that is removing posts (seemingly from the last 24 hours and page posts today) as well as a second issue with links not working properly," it said in statement.

Here's an interesting discovery!

Apple Watch Contains a Secret Sensor!
Apple's heart rate monitor is actually a plethysmograph—it looks and acts like a pulse oximeter, but Apple isn’t claiming it can measure your blood oxygen level. Why? Beats us.

How A Long-Standing Google Maps Loophole Let This Man Put Edward Snowden In The White House
Here's how it was done:
You create a business in Google Maps at an address where you can receive mail and with a phone number you can receive calls to. You get Google to send you a verification postcard to the address. Once the business is verified, you delete it from your account. Then you use another Google account to claim this now orphaned business. You gain control over it by doing verification via phone. Once that’s happened, you’re free to move the business to anywhere you want, change the name and alter other details.

Bryan Seely campaigned against Google Maps loopholes last year by making fake listings for the FBI & The Secret Service. He's back again warning against them with his latest demonstration.

Taking Advantage of Local Events with Twitter
FourSquare, the world’s most popular location sharing app and regarded as the “location layer of the internet”, recently united with Twitter to enable users to include their location in their tweets.

Earlier this year in February, Twitter also renewed a partnership with Google allowing the search engine giant access to it’s API, or ‘firehose’ of real-time activity on Twitter. Your tweets are now indexed by Google immediately after they are posted on Twitter and show up in Google search results.

This recent union of location and search with Twitter is terrific news for businesses that are using Twitter!

Hi +Debi Davis Foursquare recently split their app into two different apps: Swarm and the new Foursquare. Swarm is the check in part for sharing your location with your friends, and the new Foursquare is for finding new places you'll like. You can read about the change on the Foursquare site:

Why are Foursquare and Swarm separate apps? – Help Center http://bit.ly/1FoEydO

Thanks +Zara Altair! :-)

For the past five months I've been collaborating as part of a team of Google Plus consultants located all over the world who came together to put the small town of Eagle, Colorado on the map.

This case study documents the process.

#onthemap #googlemybusinesss #seolocal

Let’s Put Eagle, CO on the Google Map : A Case Study …

Increasingly, we look for things when we are on the go, i.e., we search locally using our smartphones, to find products or services of interest right where we are !
➢➢➢ Businesses must be on Google Maps otherwise customers are not going to find them !

Google’s Get Your Business Online (GYBO) program was set up in 2011 to help businesses get on the map. However, There is a gap between Google’s programs (GYBO) and small businesses ... certain expertise and experience is required to effectively use GYBO and “get on the map.”.

This gap is bridged by projects like Put Eagle, CO on the Google Map!

Our project was conceived as an informal experiment to learn more about “Google Local” – in the context of Eagle, CO, i.e., by putting businesses in Eagle, CO on the Google Map. This experiment emerged as part of the team’s participation in the Plus Your Business Academy, Pathfinders-Level 3.

Our conclusions :
➢ we confirmed that while there are existing self help procedures, businesses can, and do, face challenges when implementing the program
➢ after getting on the map, socialization can help businesses increase their reach - receive more traffic, and ultimately more customers.

For full details please visit our case study page : http://goo.gl/COhLp9

”The authors want to acknowledge and express their gratitude to +Stan Bush , +Mick Sharpe +martin shervington, and +Plus Your Business! for their support and also to the other team members who made valuable contributions over the course of the project: +Louisa Chan, +Sheila Hensley, +troy mc laughlin, +Lucie Nolette, +Alexandra Riecke-Gonzales, +Marilyn Ritter, and +Mary Stovall. In addition, we are grateful to the larger Google Plus community for their support and encouragement throughout the project.”

Using Ultrahaptics to Communicate Emotions
Moving right along on my favourite topic at the moment, communicating emotionally via sensors, here is a fascinating development utelising 'Ultrahaptics' to send emotions literally 'through the air'.

...touches to certain parts of the hand tend to be interpreted as specific emotions. For example, contact to the outer part of the hand is generally seen as negative; unhappy emotions are triggered by touches to the area around the pinky, while tactile sensations in the index figure are more positive. (Obrist's study did not, however, show a physiological reaction from the touches.)

Obrist used a system to test the emotional impact of the study's participants called Ultrahaptics, which uses directed bursts of air to trigger those emotions via haptic--or touch-based--feedback.
It used to be the case that if you wanted to reach out and touch someone, you had to use your hands. But thanks to scientists in the U.K., you might some day be able to use technology--and no, we're not talking the telephone--to transmit the emotions you experience to someone else via touch.

Facebook Fraud
Evidence Facebook's revenue is based on fake likes.
My first vid on the problem with Facebook: http://bit.ly/1dXudqY
I know first-hand that Facebook's advertising model is deeply flawed. When I paid to promote my page I gained 80,000 followers in developing countries who didn't care about Veritasium (but I wasn't aware of this at the time). They drove my reach and engagement numbers down, basically rendering the page useless. I am not the only one who has experienced this. Rory Cellan-Jones had the same luck with Virtual Bagel: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-18819338

The US Department of State spent $630,000 to acquire 2 million page likes and then realized only 2% were engaged. http://wapo.st/1glcyZo

I thought I would demonstrate that the same thing is still happening now by creating Virtual Cat (http://www.facebook.com/MyVirtualCat). I was surprised to discover something worse - false likes are coming from everywhere, including Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia. So even those carefully targeting their campaigns are likely being duped into spending real money on fake followers. Then when they try to reach their followers they have to pay again.

And it's possible to be a victim of fake likes without even advertising. Pages that end up on Facebook's "International Suggested Pages" are also easy targets for click-farms seeking to diversify their likes. http://tnw.co/NsflrC

Google Replaces A Site’s URL From The Search Results & Uses Their Site Name & Breadcrumb Path
Google said that starting today they have updated their “algorithms that display URLs in the search results to better reflect the names of websites, using the real-world name of the site instead of the domain name, and the URL structure of the sites in a breadcrumbs-like format.” Google has actually been testing this for a few years now, it was not uncommon for searchers to see these tests over the past few years.

With that, they are giving webmasters a way to better communicate the site name and breadcrumb data through structured data schema.

After years of testing, Google has replaced the URL with the site name and breadcrumb trail in the mobile search snippets.

EFF Busts Podcasting Patent, Invalidating Key Claims at Patent Office
Ruling from USPTO Invalidates All Claims Used to Threaten Podcasters
[...]
“We’re grateful for all the support of our challenge to this patent. Today is a big victory for the podcasting community” said EFF Staff Attorney Daniel Nazer, who also holds the Mark Cuban Chair to Eliminate Stupid Patents. “We’re glad the Patent Office recognized what we all knew: ‘podcasting’ had been around for many years and this company does not own it.”

The “podcasting patent” became big news in 2013, when a company called Personal Audio, LLC, began demanding licensing fees from podcasters including comedian Adam Carolla and three major television networks. Personal Audio doesn’t do podcasting itself, but instead used its patent to claim infringement and collect payouts from actual creators.

#podcast #podcasting #patent
San Francisco - The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) invalided key claims in the so-called “podcasting patent” today after a petition for review from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF)—a decision that significantly curtails the ability of a patent troll to threaten podcasters big and small.

It is an interesting application of the 'local' theme. It certainly is a different feel when you play on streets that you're familiar with.
