The short days of winter, more hours of darkness than sunlight combined with the frigid weather that blankets most of the nation, can put a real crimp in your riding style. After a few weeks of motorcycle deprivation, a motorcyclist can develop a condition known as the dreaded cabin fever. But, fear not, we have found a few home remedies that can cure all but the most advanced cases. This first treatment is a variation of light therapy; in this case, we use the light of the silver screen, AKA motorcycle movies. If you can’t ride them, at least you watch them.
Let’s start with some of the classics. The Wild One, from 1953 is a true classic that in many ways launched both the film genre of biker exploitation movies and typecast motorcycle riders in pop culture. Then, there is Easy Rider, a 1969 pop culture classic that melded the 1960s counterculture with custom motorcycles and the open road, thus evolving the stereotype of motorcycle riders. The other side of the coin in classic motorcycle movies is On Any Sunday. This 1971 documentary explored motorcycle racing and shone a positive light on our sport. And, while not a motorcycle movie as such, 1963’s The Great Escape has a motorcycle chase scene that is emblematic for the relentless pursuit of freedom that beats in the heart of every motorcyclist. A piece of trivia, Steve McQueen, whose character Captain Virgil Hilts leads that chase scene in The Great Escape, was one of the financial backers of On Any Sunday, and he can be seen riding in the documentary.
While post-apocalypse TV shows are all the rage these days, motorcycles have long been featured in this genre. A dystopian classic from down under, Mad Max from 1979 features some wild stunts and might make you yearn to ride the vastness of the Australian outback, pre-apocalypse of course. Then, there is Terminator 2. This 1991 action flick includes some truly memorable “Arnold style” motorcycle action. The 2009 Terminator Salvation sequel also features some wicked terminator motorcycles. These films and others in this vein have even spawned a breed of survivalist motorcycles. Life imitating fiction? Who can say, but the motorcycles in these films are sure to excite.
There are so many movies that have motorcycles as major players; there is not enough room to list them all. You can choose films that explore darker themes, like Girl on a Motorcycle, or crime dramas like Electra Glide in Blue. Or, watch films that draw on the analogy of riding and flying like Top Gun. If you are a classic rock fan, try #Quadrophenia, Mods vs. Rockers vie with each other in 1960s England. Or, you can go for some laughs with Wild Hogs. Whatever direction you choose, motorcycle movies will help you survive cabin fever.
Till next time, ride safe!
